making the inflation rate climb faster is always a good thing... when products cost more fewer customers buy products, especially in this economy.

Not to mention consumer worries over recent financial events.

In my area (resort town), McDonald's pays $10.00 an hour starting pay because there are so many restaurants and workers are in demand. Crackle Barrel pays $13.00 an hour for dishwashers.

    Market forces at work.

Btw...I heard a report yesterday that Walmart average wage is $12.81 per hour.

You act as if every person has the same chances in life from the begining. The whole Horatio Alger myth is what creates this idea that "others" deserve what they get. The fact is most minimum wage wrokers are not teenagers, they are people who for many reasons must work for minimum wage. And if a person wants to serve burgers their whole life, should that person have to go on public assistance to get by? should that spread strep to every 4th customer because they can't afford to go to the doctor, or get the meds? would their kids have the same opportunity as yours to get a good education and thrive as adults?

Larry I remember in the late 90s that a Wendy's, in the state I used to live in, had a sign out stating "starting pay $12.50/hr". That's how tight the job market was in that town...supply & demand was working and I didn't see any new hires saying "oh, that's too much please pay me less". Instead of natural market forces, now we're trying to artificially inflate wages.

I really do wonder how many of these people that think $15 to flip burgers just leave extra money for the "under" paid Walmart or McDonald's workers rather than arguing for someone else to take their money and do it for them...get what I mean?

The whole I want this life and expect to be paid for it without working towards bettering myself is purely absurd.

So what you're saying is if I wanted my current lifestyle, I should have just picked up a shovel and dug ditches and yelled and carried on about it so as to attempt to force higher pay? Hmm, seems a bit like Early Union movement in 1900's...

That is an exceptional story. In that it is the exception. Is great that you found the way to succeed, but why does that mean that you would not want others to do the same. And I will assume you haven't been convicted of a felony, or have a few children, or support impoverished family. I'm not suggesting that everyone should achieve the same things in life or that some aren't more driven than others, or that successful risk shouldn't be rewarded, I'm suggesting that if someone works a full work week and does a job that satisfies their employer than they should make enough money to live on their own. I don't see that as radical or outlandish.

I don't think lots of these independent franchise owners can afford to double the pay of all of their minimum wage workers....

you say " Like and early union movement" like its a bad thing. Do you have all your fingers? Do you see mining for 10 year olds as a good alternative to school?

I'm not trying to defend unions, as they have become greedy and self serving over the years. However to say they are the downfall of america is absurd. The only reason we currently have a standard 40 hr work week and any kind of work safety regulations is because of unions. If it weren't for them, most of us would be working 80hr weeks for a couple dollars an hour. Many would also be doing so under risky unhealthy working conditions.

Also I don't understand why so many think the minimum wage should be able to support a family? These are temporary jobs for students and retirees. If you could support a family and make a good "living" wage working fast food, then were is the incentive to go to college or learn a new skill to better yourself?

No not at all. If they really choose that job then the shouldn't even be allowed to apply for public assistance.

    Are you serious with this?

In the case of Mcd's they could afford the franchise fee.... Its seven figures now I think. I might be interesting to see how their sales would go if their employees could spend less on lunch than they make in their "lunch hour"

Did I say it was bad or was it an assumption on your part? Likewise with current labor laws, Federally and locally, yes established mainly by Unions decades ago. I'm quite sure we dont have 10 year olds working in Coal mines...

Very, this kind of idea lets people die in the streets and creates those oh so quaint hords of beggers and pick pocket kids. I personally would like to not be assaulted for my food leaving the restaurant...
