Gas Saving Mods

I wanted to get a list of mods that actually help mpg. Who would like to start this off. Of course this is for the V6.

 

CAI, Exhaust, headers, Throttle body spacer, and electric fan. thats all that i can think of off the top of my head.

 

reality..........keeping air in tires properly inflated, and no heavy foot. a scanguage will probably be the best tool you can get for mileage.......you'll watch how you drive alot more. most other things only mildly,if any help...........and that being generous.

 

This is a VERY common debate that always boils down to the same answer: No mod will ever pay for itself realistically in gas mileage, except the egg under right foot mod.

Keep tires inflated and calm driving techniques.

 

However, if you are like me and enjoy just trying to get the best gas mileage possible regardless of realistic aspects of a payout, there are a few you can try and a few to avoid.

Things to try: Making the opposite of a cold air intake (one that takes hot air from inside the engine compartment will yield better MPG). A high flow exhaust would possibly help like the dynomax. Smaller tires are the best choice and removing all excess weight from the vehicle.

Avoid: throttle body spacers since this is not the 1970's. Exhaust that sound good but kill performance.

 

2x4 under the gas peddle. Cheap and gets the job done!

 

Leave it parked and walk......

On a serious note...by the time you pay for an exhaust, intake, and anything esle..you'd be better off saving that money and use it to buy gas....

I get a kick out of everyone that is trying to get the best gas milage on thier truck...don't lift it (wind resistance)...don't put wide or heavy tires and rims on it (increases wight and rolling resistance)....

save your money...if you want good fuel economy... buy a 5 lug 2 wheel drive....

 

Good points here. I just enjoy trying to gain mileage and perforance at the same time and don't care too much about saving the movey back. For example I got a AFE pro dry S drop in filter. Even if I don't save any gas milage I will never have to replace the filter so it will pay for itself that way. My headers and exhaust project are going to gain a few ponies and not for sound so I am taking it slow and not expecting to make my money back

 

i am not looking to spend $100 and get that isn gas saving back..what i am looking to do is basically do things to get better mileage so that instead of going lets say 300 miles on a full tank, i can now go 350. i bought a truck, not a prius, so thats all i im interested in. i will def make more powre out of this thing, but was loooking for ways to extend time between fuel ups

 

Like tacomaman06 said, best way is to take care of the simple stuff: Make sure tires are properly inflated & go easy on the gas. Your air filter will contribute to better mpg though. But, only in a minuscule way. Hey, every little bit helps. When I installed my flowmaster muffler I noticed about a .5 mpg. increase(if that...).

 

in that case, as carmellocafe said...every little bit helps. full exhaust system..headers and muffler, a good filter like the afe pro dry s, and synthetic fluids....they will all help a bit.

 

I'm hoping the $100.00 Access roll-up tonneau cover I picked up this weekend off of Craigslist will pay for itself over time.

 

does driving with no cover but tailgate down help???cause bed extender willkeep it from bouncing up and down

 

im not sure but tonnue covers sure help save on gas with the reduced wind resistance.. or you can risk your life and draft behind big rigs.. jk dont do that..

 

No. When you're driving with the tailgate up, there is an "Air pocket" in the bed, which allows the air to flow over the bed without too much resistance. From what I've heard/read, when you let the tailgate down the pocket disappears and the air pushes down on the bed, creating more resistance (again, I'm not 100% sure, that's just what I've heard.) Adding a tonneau cover might help a little, but probably not enough to really notice.

 

You might pick up 1mpg on the highway but I didn't really see any difference. I got the same 23mpg I got sans the cover.

The right foot mod is the best thing you can do. All the other stuff is mostly placebo type stuff. Nothing wrong with a CAI but the OEM system already IS a CAI so there really won't be much if any gain there. I saw no difference when adding an aftermarket muffler and MAYBE .5 mpg with the high flow filter.

 

The mudflaps have to cause a bunch of drag.
Anyone try a test with or without them.
When you see a set bent back at 45 degrees on a Tacoma on the freeway it kind of makes you wonder how much it matters.

 

all of these things listed, plus try not to leave any heavy items in your truck that you don't need. I think I read somewhere that for every 100 pounds you loose a mpg or so.

 

so then the girlie shouldnt' get a bigger set huh....well thats not good news...

 

In this unique case, I would make an exception for the weight increase.
