Actually, it takes more of man to drive a 2wd, especially in snow. Requires talent as well. When I was a kid my dad drove 2wd as in the early 70's 4wd were not common. Even my mom drove a rwd car and here in nh we get and got plenty of snow.....we always did fine. These days, 10 city plow trucks chase down the first snow flake and all roads are cleared quickly..... hell, they even plow rain these days. IMO, its foolish to run 4x4 gear for the very few times you think you need it when for real just smart driving will suit just fine. If you off-road or frequent conditions that merit AWD, well that's entirely different. I have owned several 4wd. My last 3 trucks have been 2wd, I aint going back.

The 2wd trucks are a nice lower cost alternative.

I've noticed that its region dependent. When I was living in Texas the Pre-Runners out numbered the 4x4's by 10:1.

But up here in the Northwest Pre-Runners are not as abundant.

That's quite an analogy bald tires to 2wd or 4wd. What are you 16 years old? I suppose you 4wd bigots think that stopping distance are better as well? Puuuulease. Many times its the nitwits in the ditch that are the ones that think their 4wd allows them to drive like the road is not slippery.

I agree that 4wd does not make you invincible, there are many many threads on here about this same argument, but that doesn't mean that 4wd doesn't have it's advantages in the snow.

Personally once you break like 20-30 mph I don't feel like 4wd has any advantage over 2wd, unless you want to drive like an idiot or something I guess, but it sure is nice when driving in stop and go traffic on an icy road.

Realistically nowadays, unless you are trying to drive through a bad snow storm, most all paved roads are maintained well enough by the snowplows and salt/sand spray trucks that cars have no trouble getting where they are going. So can you get by without 4wd, of course, but that doesn't mean I don't want it. But I don't drive my Tacoma like a car either. I have a car for daily commuting, twice the fuel ecomony = half the cost. I use my Tacoma for offroading so 4wd is a must.

 

I'll agree that you can get by with 2wd in some snowy conditions, but how deep are you talking? I drove a 2wd delivery truck for 20 years and was able to get everywhere I wanted, but I had to chain up multiple times daily, and I had to abuse the truck much more than I would have if I had 4wd. 4wd just makes everything easier in the snow, why would you want to make things harder for yourself? Everyday I couldn't wait to finish work and get in my 4wd.
Stopping distance can be shortened with 4wd by downshifting and using engine braking instead of friction braking. You just have so much more control when in 4wd. Yes you are correct when saying mostly 4wd vehicles are stuck or flipped during snowy and icy weather, because people have a false sense of security when driving them and usually are not educated enough in how to drive in winter conditions. But I'll guaranty that I'd run circles around your 2wd with the same tires on your 2wd and my 4wd, it wouldn't even be a contest. Just because you think you're superior driving skills would negate the advantages of 4wd, that's only true vs a driver with poor skills. A driver with equal skills will out drive you with 4wd and that's a fact. Physics dictates this to be true, double the amount of traction will always win.

 

I sure am glad I don't have to attempt to justify the capability of my 2WD truck on the internet. That would just plain suck.

You 4wd is not superior to 2wd and each has its advantages and I believe mine has more, and maybe when you get older and wiser you too may see the light........I will lose less money, save more Gas, run longer, accelerate faster, be cheaper to maintain, cheaper to insure & register..........I spent less, will spend less, and go everywhere I need to go. I will be able to carry all I need a taco to carry the whole time. And I wont be pissed when I see 50 plow trucks fighting for that dusting of snow on the road 3 times a year just for a chance to hit that little button. I even pull snowmobiles with mine....how would you poor souls ever get by in snow country without that button? lmao.
BTW< I also own a AWD F/S truck so don't bother trying to hose us what you think your 4wd can do on the street that a 2wd cant. I also own ATVs, so I don't need to take either trucks off road.

Besides, doesn't a real man drive a real truck as in full size? All your "4wd" justifications are mute when compared your mini to full size. Have fun kids.

 

Right on man, you win. I'm headed to the dealership to trade mine on a 2wd. Why did I make such a bad decision with buying a useless 4wd in the first place, I guess I'll find out soon.

 

Just for kicks, what kind of mpg are you getting? I get about 17-18 mpg and I'll bet I can accelerate faster than you The Tacoma's (even the 4 cyl) are not exactly known for getting great MPG. There are fullsize V8 pickups out there rated higher than the V6's.

Of course on dry pavement, the 4wd has no advantage over the 2wd, it's all for sub-par conditions and offroading.

Speaking of saving money... My car gets about 35 mpg around town and 45 on the freeway. I paid $2000 cash for it about 7 years ago and it just might give your 2wd a run for it's money in acceleration. Sure it can't tow but there are cars that can and probably still get better mpg than your Taco. I don't think "saving money" is a good reason for buying a 2wd, unless you just flat out wanted a Tacoma that will never leave pavement.
