First post here, hopefully this stuff isn't a repost, but i was wondering.

I am trying to decide between a Tacoma and a Tundra.

I mainly want something with a double cab, so i can haul around a couple friends, and something to tow a little and carry a quad in the back.

In the pre-05 double cabs, who hauls what kind of quad in them and how well does it fit. The biggest thing i see being a problem is that i don't think you could fit a truck box in there and still get a quad in, but i imagine one will fit minus the truck box, right? I guess i'm wondering the same about the newer models too, because i haven't decided what year i am going to get.

How well do you guys do towing? What have you towed and how hard of a time does your truck have?

And lastly, what is a real world gas mileage figure for your truck? (V6's).

If i could hear some opinions on some of this stuff that would be awesome, thanks.

First off welcome to TW, we have a couple of forums i think it may help you decide on what type of tacoma you want there are also photos available for you to view in case you have to pick what type of color or style of taco. the tundra on the other hand unless you are in construction or haul large objects let's say for example 80ft boat or some sort haul 2 atvs on your truck bed. it all in your personal choice ofcourse, well here at TW we can give you advice but it is your overall decision on what to own i have an '05 and loving every min of it. so if you decide on what year type of taco you choose. we're here to help you. :) hope this helps.

I get 21 mpg with mixed driving. half city, half hwy. I have a 4.0 v6 2007 double cab long bed. I haven't towed anything yet but it handles very smoothly.
exampel... Even during one of the bad ice storms we had this year (I'm in Missouri) I was able to smoothly go up a hill where there were cars scattered off the road left and right. I have a prerunner, so no 4-wheel drive, but the LSD (limited slip diferential) helped out!
I have hauled a truck load of compost (1.54 yards) for my new garden. I could feel the weight but the truck handled just fine. The 6 foot bed was convienent for moving a friends queen size bed.
This truck fits my needs... I haven't hauled a 4-wheeler, nor do I own one... :( but maybe someone on the site has...

Thanks for the info. I would like to have one like yours, but i'm trying to go a few years older to get a lower price. I wish they would have made a longbed version in the 02-03-04 years.

I average about 22 MPG on the highway, but then I only weigh a few pounds.I have a manual transmission and that supposedly makes a difference. any way what kind or type of ATV, and You may have to get a bed extender, some states I found require this. I have a Yamaha Blaster and It fits nicely into the bed, however with a full utility ATV the wheel wells may not allow it to fit. So I would measure out the full maximum width of the ATV to see if it will fit. I have a bed toolbox, but can only fit it and the ATV as long as the tailgate is dropped down, as far as towing goes the tacoma handles really well, as I have towed a few trailers, I would suggest the manual trans for towing however, I find the tacoma was a little bit challenging to shift as there are long throws between gears, most of my loads have rarely exceeded 700lbs however(Firewood and ATV, Stones, building materials). I have a v-6 4.0l. The Tundra is a bit pricier, but larger and of course more payload and towing capacity....I suggest getting what will fit the need. Either way with a Toyota I doubt you will be disappointed....

I just did a MPG test on the hwy and I got 23 mpg with the K&N air filter. I ve towed a boat 6Hr. each way through the desert with my 2000 3.4 V6. It felt like the whole drive was a 6% grade but no overheating or tranny trouble. I was cruising at about 60mph ave. I wish I had the tundra considering the boat weighs about 3500 dry. If you want to tow regularly get the Tundra V8. Hope this helps

I have an 07 double cab taco long box and haul a bombardier outlander 700 throughout western and northern canada often (oil and gas work). I have to leave the tailgate down but the quad is not sitting on the gate, it just sticks out past the end. I have zero trouble hauling the quad and they do not get much bigger than mine. It is a little tricky at first knowing how to load the quad but you get it down quite quickly. I also haul the odd trailer camping and very rarely have had any trouble with bogging down or anything, doesn't overheat etc. As said previously, you have to discern your wishes and what you'll be using it for. The 2nd gen tacos have a haul capacity of around 6500 pounds but if you have a 6000lb trailer, you won't want to haul it around everyday with a taco etc. good luck.
