Tire presser

I have a 14 ' tandem axle trailer that is loaded up pretty good. I have an 09 dbl cab OR. I have have the leaf spring tsb done and I also added the Firestone Rite Ride bags installed.

The towing weight is just about maxed out. What do tire pressure is good for the tires on the truck and trailer? Should I put it at max pressure per tire recommendations.

No. Read sticker in door jam or read owners manual.

Chances are oP doesn't have stock tires, in which case those stickers aren't right for him.

 

He should be able to answer his own question. I answered no to maxing out his tire pressure. Are you saying he should max them out then? Do you have an answer to the question(s)?

You are correct. I do not have stock tires.

 

So what is a good range of pressure to be at? If I knew the answer I would not have asked for help. I have Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus on my truck.

 

It should say on your sidewall the max pressure at what weight.

 

I'm pretty sure you would need to increase tire pressure but what size tires? How much weight? How far of a tow? What size tires on trailer? Too much info missing to answer. That's why I said you should be able to answer your own question because you still have the info needed to resolve.

It does.. I belive it is 55 PSI.. I ll have to look and see if it says what weight.

 

Maxed out load, yes... max sidewall pressure.

 

Or just listen to rich cause that dude knows much.

 

OK I get it. The truck size is 265 70 16. Not sire of the trailer. The trailer is about 5500#

I guess I was thinking the heaver the load the more tire pressure I needed and since I was basically at max load of the tow weight then I needed to be a max load psi on the tires.. I am going from MI to CO. (1300 miles) Pretty much flat land all the way. So I wanted to run it by far more knowledgeable people then I.

 

I never thought it was a good idea to go all the way to the max in any condition but I'm sub'd for this one. We live we learn. Now that 5500# @1300mi might be a whole notha can o worms. .

Yes indeed.. We shall see.. I have towed it around town to get an idea of what it will be like and it tows great. Those air bags make all the difference.

 

Max is there for a reason.

And sidewall max is actually not the maximum safe pressure. It simply means that the tire's max load is attained at that pressure.
Higher inflation reduces the likelihood of hydroplaning, reduces tire heat, which extends life and reduces treadwear.
This is within reasonable levels.
Going too high CAN lead to wearing the center of the tire, but in 30 years I've never seen it on any of my vehicles and I've always run at sidewall max.

Only drawback is the ride is rougher.
If you drive offroad, you'll want to air down for flotation on sand and rocks.

 

Thank you.. I am just asking this PSI question just to get me from point A to point B. Once I get there I will go back to what I have the PSI set at now.

I ran max, 80 psi on my old sets and got 60k on a 7500# dodge diesel.
Never had a problem on both trucks over 300k on the two trucks, all at or about max.

 

I run my truck tires at max PSI for highway driving and my trailer at max PSI as well. Tires last a long time and seems to tow great. Have always done it that way, I have 5 trailers that I tow, 2 snowmobile trailers, 2 boats, and a utility. None are 5500# just for the record, nothing much over 2500#.
