Sad isn't it. Not all but in general our teachers, fire fighters, police, EMS, military & I think nurses are all under paid for the services they provide. I don't know if it's supply vs. demand or what but IMO all of the groups I listed are more deserving of a raise than Walmart or fast food employees.

Yea starting pay for teachers in my area is 33k, no unions, but the benefits are ok they have a 30 yr retirement plan, after 30 you get %60 of your highest salary.

At my local technical college, I overheard some police officers talking about pay. One commented that gilmer county police dept. Started people out at $9.75.
I would hope they give you a raise pretty quick.

I don't understand why you guys seem to think its only fast food workers that make minimum wage?

I make $7.40 an hour as a production manager because I'm a college student

By the term "manager" I would guess you have direct reports and additional responsibility? It that's the case, what's the incentive by offering what an extra 15 cents an hour?

I run reports, manage all production, am my own boss (sort of) control all employees time cards, post all bills, etc.. I've been making $7.40 since I started no raises.

Its the union people protesting from what I heard on the radio. The unions want to start a fast food union so they can get more union dues, they aren't bringing in as much money because they forced employers to move or shut down.

I don't know what y'all do but that sounds kinda shady to me. I'm just saying if you carry extra responsibility it should be worth more than an extra ~2%.

I'm a college student that works for a food service company. A pretty big one at that. I don't get any extra money because I'm a college student.. it doesn't matter how hard I work they know if I quit they could replace me within a couple days

Which is why all food service and retail jobs suck. We're treated as disposable employees because they can always hire someone else. Especially if you work your way up the ladder and start making decent money.

And in the way the majority of the public treats you as a customer and yeah, really fun job.

Yup, there is none of this "working my way up" because its a college job. But you know what? It's a job.. sure it would be nice to have more money or to be able to put money away but this job pays my bills and allows me to spend a little money on my truck/gf/eating out/etc

You keep saying "because" you're a college student and "because" it's a college job. What does that mean? Is your job through the college as some sort of student contract or something? Is it directly associated with you being enrolled in school, and the job goes away when your active enrollment does? If not, why would you be held back from raises and advancement because you're a student?

I have a job from a contractor of my school. As a student worker I wont be getting a raise due to company policy. Unfortunately for me, even though I'm a manager I came in after there were already 2-3 managers. Since there are only 12 employees total no body else will be promoted. I graduate before these kids so I wont get that promotion even though I have the title. As soon as I graduate I am no longer allowed to work.

So I have the title and all the responsibilities just without the extra pay
