looking for a detailed 2012 Tacoma maintnance schedule

I just picked up a 2012 tacoma, access cab, V6, TRD off road brand new from the dealership. Not only am I new to owning a toyota this is also my first brand new vehicle. I want this truck to last forevor, and hold its value best as possible.

Toyota gives me a very brief description of a maintenance schedule. Things like "maintenance service" are on there, first one at 80,000km. I'm looking for a detailed list to include everything, transmission fluid, transfer case, differential, etc. I'm mechanicly inclined and with a little google action I can find step by step on everything. I also plan on ordering a service manual, its possible the list I'm looking for will be in that. But figured I'd make a post on these forums because being a DIY person ill be back to ask for tips later.

 

Open the glove compartment and find the owners manual. Its all in there.
Regarding diff, xfer case, tranny.... you're not going to find anything in any manual for those, they're supposed to be "good for the life of the truck".

 

The warrenty and maintenance manual given with the truck blows, basically ses bring it to toyota every 8000km. Everything is covered on 2 little pages.

Isn't transmission fluid supposed to be changed yearly? Since when has that been for the life of the vehicle?

 

Looks like toyota hasnt released a service manual for 2012 yet. And may never do it.

Has anybody here used the toyota TIS (technical information system) webpage? It ses it has all information about maintenance schedules. My Boat service manual has an awesome printed service manual for the mercruiser motor. I learned alot about that engine with it. If nobody here has what im looking or ill spend the 15$ for a 2 day subscription to the TIS when i have some spare time to surf through it.

 

I heard toyota wasn't going to release a service manual only have an online one.

 

^Toyota has a technical information system (TIS) web site that lets you download the latest service manuals, TSBs and other stuff. It's meant for shops, so there's a subscription fee. You can pay $15 for two-day access. It's cheaper than buying the service manual.

Unless Toyota changed the format again for 2012, the 2 little pages tell you everything.

It should be 6 years / 72000 km, unless Toyota changed the wording again for 2012. The Tacoma's transmission is a sealed unit with no dipstick. Both the transmission and the fluid are designed to go longer between fluid changes. In any case I recommend you get the fluid changed a couple of months before your powertrain warranty expires. That way, if problems arise after fluid replacement, you can get it repaired at no cost.

 

Every 8000km bring it The dealer and they change things, fix things, and shake things. Then take it home and it works.

I have been following every service appointment with my '07 and I think they changed the tranny, transfer case, and diff fluids around 50,000miles (I think 80,000km?). But keep an eye on them, they told me 2 or 3 times that I needed that service until I told them no I already had it done, and they were like "oh, I guess you did, never mind"

 

And be ready, it's a costly appointment!!

I change oil and filter and clean the air filter at 5000 mi. Cabin filter about 10000 mi.

Brake fluid at 30 K with diff fluids.
Thats about it for me.

 

Exactly, that's why I'd rather do it myself. Only pay for servicing when the skill level is beyond me. Or requires the purchase of specialized tools. If I end up creating something myself ill share post it. Will take me some time to research everything I can think of.

Nice man, that's as complete as I think you could ever need. I never got around to putting something together myself lol. I also started a new job since I made this thread and make enough money to always pay a dealer, and will most likely replace my 2012 with a brand new Tacoma when the 5 year warranty is up.

I'm going to print that and reference it to make shur the dealer is doing there job correctly though. I skimmed through it and transfer case, front and rear diff are at 30,000miles

Actually I will probably do those extra maintenance points myself. When it ses recommended/inspect I'll just go and do it. I'm an industrial mechanic afterall, just lazy lol
