It varies from state to state. One usually contacts the Adult/Family/Human services. A SW will interview you and ask questions about your income, bills, kids, and all kinds of other personal information. The SW will then decide what kind of assistance you qualify for. Food Stamps, Welfare, Medicaid, certain grants or vouchers. Thats how the process works. As for actual numbers, maybe a social worker here can fill in.

There are several variables. Depends on what government aid you're applying for...

From my understanding the affordable care act provides subsidies to families of 4 making into the $50k range. Housing & food stamps are less but well above the poverty line. Same for WIC & heat subsidies. Of course lower income produces a lower tax margin as well.

I believe subsidies are also different depending on which state you're in. I know here in Mississippi, once you qualify for something like SSI you only loose $1 of SSI for each $2 you actually earn. Other states have different ratios. That's part of the quandary of does it save tax $$$. Income for corporations is most likely taxed higher that that of a person near the poverty level. When one considers that aid is not reduced on a $ for $ basis, one can see there may be little or no government spending reduction.

Hey the good new is, I need 37 more people in my household to be in "poverty". Tell me that table isn't screwed up.

No, I paid rent to my inlaws and bought groceries as well as cut grass, did maintenance and other odds and ends to earn my keep/extra cash.My argument isn't about if it is affordable to live off minimum wage because frankly it is not. My point and I suppose that I was unclear but that if people didn't focus on stupid crap that is beyond their means in terms of affordability then it would be that much more possible to survive. I guess I just look at fast food as a means of launching into a long term career. I also find it frustrating that some people would want such a large increase for a job that requires little to no skill in comparison to business or trade skills that require training and movement within the ranks for a higher wage.

    K

    Thanks for the replies.

Seemed it would be more cut and dried seeing how people are pretty adamant that a raise in the minimum wage by " a couple bucks an hour " won't help people above the poverty line and off reliance on government subsidies

you lose because you said America is a Christian nation...

    and that is incorrect.

you also lose because I clearly posted "Americans are the most charitable people in the history of mankind", correctly (noted in post #478)... and made no reference to percentage of population.

Good night to you Mr. Logan, and God Bless.

Everyone could use the advice to stay in their means... but some can barely cover the necessities.

And the first rule of negotiation is to ask for more than you expect to get, so that what you end up with, you will be happy with. The other feels they won, because they gave less... both parities win.

    which ever you choose.

however, I wouldn't suggest living in a country where the government chooses for you.
