Freon is the brand name. Owned by Dupont chemicals I think. Kind of like Kleenex and Chapstick.

I run R134a but I didn't have time. I should have gone to a shop, but I didn't think things through. I just saw parts so I had to install immediately.

My girl decided to take apart the old refrigerator. Cut a tube thinking it was a wire. Next thing I know there's a refrigerant cloud in the kitchen. Luckily it's non-toxic (unless exposed to flame, then it's deadly). Eventually I took it to the scrap yard, where it leaked all over the bed by the time I got there.. Pretty sure it was R22.

I had my 90 Lumina converted to the new stuff. The AC was never as cold when it had the old stuff.

    I hope he's ok.

The converted ones were prone to that..I believe the compressors worked at different speeds.

Very true that it was equal blame in my book. However, the Bronco II (same platform used for the Explorer) was having rollover issues and none of them that I read of were able to be traced to tires. During the testing Ford knew this to be the case with the Explorer as well and in those cases the tires were not separating if I remember right. That said, the Firestone tires' tread separation issue would greatly increase the chances of a rollover. Among other things, this led to Ford and Firestone parting ways after a very long relationship.

I'd have to look on my bookshelf, but I read a book about the issues and the legal proceedings. Good read.

    Glad he's doing better.
You said this happens a lot; if you don't mind my asking, does he have any other symptoms, or just the fevers? Like, are the fevers a result of another condition?
