Gotcha that is a hefty price for a water jug but I may keep an eye out for them

Scepters are in fact hard to find and expensive. The military still uses them, but the regulations changed for ones used by civilians. Scepter did not want to bother with changing how the cans were made and paying to have them certified for public use since they have the military contract and that is the bulk of their business. Not worth the effort for a miniscule public market.

So every now and then some surplus ones will show up for sale, but they are expensive because you really just can't get them anymore.

The LCI cans are similar but are much thinner construction and have different venting and do not use a viton gasket like the Scepter do. The Spout on an LCI can is also much thinner than a Scepter.

Here's a Scepter fuel can. You'll notice the difference in the cap compared to a LCI can. Also the strap on the cap can be colored differently. OD or Red is typically for gasoline, a tan or yellow strap is for diesel. The cans can also come in different colors too, typically OD or Red for gas, and OD and yellow for diesel. But can also be found in Tan and orange. There is also a rare blue strap used for Kerosene.

Here's the red strap marked with P for petrol (gas).

    Scepter Diesel fuel can

Here's the spout of a Scepter Fuel can. You can see the thicker vented spout (small hole) and the viton gasket in the cap.
    DSC00231_4337801e3116324cc23bac38afb721bf5e9de601.jpg

The Scepter water cans are almost identical to LCI cans with the vented cap. That's what it looks like brutalguyracing has on his truck are Scepter water cans. These aren't ideal for use as fuel cans. They are prone to leaking when used for fuel and do not have the viton gaskets and are just less durable.

Here's the Scepter water can (comes in a variety of colors). Notice the different cap
    [IMG]

For comparison this is the spout of a Scepter water can. You can clearly see how much thinner it is.
    ScepterMWC2_f012f1f7d6482a556cf8da9eca0d600377eccf10.jpg

Here's an LCI water can. Typically stamped with "property of US government". As you can see it nearly identical to the Scepter water cans. LCI cans are MUCH cheaper than the Scepter cans. Much of the inflated price of the Scepters comes from the name and supply and demand.

Sorry for the major dump of fuel can info....... Just figured I'd share it so you knew what you were looking at when you go to buy.

    Awesome information Adam!

I think I would only get a scepter for water anyways but I'm not in any rush I can add mounts for whatever cans later on down the road

We can all thank California for the shitty gas can options we have these days and most likely the high prices on the quality ones that have given up on the consumer market.
