I've got a Viper two-way alarm/starter, Canadian model # 5901(may be different in the States). I've had it for 5 years now, and it still works great. I can start my truck from a few blocks away at work, and it's toasty warm when I get in it, great since last week was -25*F for most of it. The alarm has saved me a couple times, although I was once robbed of gas without the alarm going off. The remote is rechargeable, instead of relying on replaceable batteries that can get expensive. I love my Viper, I've had 3 of them, and they all just work. One thing though is to find a reputable shop with a certified MECP installer.

I looked at them, but a little to pricey for my uses lol. I do like the viper products though and found some cheaper ones at best buy that fits my needs

Well, if it's just a starter, I would still go with Viper. I have a couple friends that have Compustar starters and they like them too. I would stick to either brand, they both seem reliable.

I have a "auto start" brand 2 way starter. This is my 3rd year with it and it works great.
My dad and 3 friends both have them as well have had no issues.

    I think I paid around $300 installed.

Ive had the same Viper for 3-4 years now, and would highly recommend it. About a year or so ago, when I did the slide-bolt tailgate mod, and fabricated a vertical lock for my Retrax bed cover I was able to tie all three power actuators to the alarm system via bosch relays..so I can unlock my tailgate via the remote...very convenient.

Took most of a day to have the alarm installed...and is not the cheapest option out there...but worth every penny imo.

I needed an immobilized bypass for mine.
If the guy at Best Buy doesn't know, then I wouldn't be having him install it!

Some places only install certain types of starters due to liability reasons. Either way viper is the best and the tacoma's need a pkall bypass mod and two keys to program it. You will need the bypass no matter what you buy.

I had mine installed at the dealer. It is an Automate and it did need an immobilizer bypass module. My wives Rav4 had one installed at the dealer also and instead of using an immobilizer bypass module they put the valet key under the dash and ran a wire from it to the ignition! I don't think this is the best way to go because it completely bypasses the engine immobilizer. The only problem I have with my remote start is if it is below 20 degrees sometimes it does not start the vehicle.

Recently had a Viper 5706 installed in my 2013 at BB and added the Smart Start module and service. Only had it a couple of weeks but it has been in single digits below zero last couple of mornings. Really liking it a lot so far.

I'm looking into the Viper Smart Start system. But don't know if it's manual-trans compatible ? (just sent them an email via their website)

You'd think it could be done (probably more expensive), especially with the Tacomas' Clutch-Start-Cancel switch...

Not sure if I'll get the alarm/remote-start model, or just the starter. I live in a condo building, & the parking lot is on the other side (key-fob type wouldn't work).

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this product. The majority of people seem very displeased which is too bad because, if all the features worked well, it seems like the best product available. If you do get this please put up a review on it.

I purchased the Smart Start module and service with my 5706. When I signed up for the service I almost did only 1 year instead of 3 because of all the negative reviews. Took a chance and went with 3 years and have no regrets now.

The 5706 claims 1 mile range with the FOB however I already knew that would likely not be the case. Many hospitals and clinics that I work in have old thick stone walls and I'm often being below ground level so knew that it would not have much if any range. Even cell phone reception can be tricky at times for me. But so far my Smart Start (Android) has worked flawlessly every time. I talked to the installers about it at BB and they both have more than 10 years experience each doing installs. When Smart Start first came out the servers were overloaded, DI didn't have the capacity for the demand and it was hit or miss. And some installers will put the module too low on the vehicle and other vehicles parked around it will block reception. So they try to mount it as high as they can in the vehicle, having a truck also helps because it sits higher. I haven't had mine that long but so far every time it has worked for me and I'm glad that I purchased it.

Keep in mind that that module has to be used with one of their remote starters. It's an add-on. The starter can be used with a manual. At least, that's what the brochure says.

    That is incorrect.

The "MODULE" they sell @ FutureShop & everywhere else (Model Number: VSMC100C) is different than the "SYSTEM" (VSS3001). The later is what I want...

Funny thing is, they're very close in price (~ 10%)... But the "system" is a stand-alone unit that interfaces with the vehicles existing factory remote-locking system.

    ;)

    7th question down...
