Hey guys so thursday when I was leaving to school I left my driveway and suddenly heard clanking and sounds of something breaking in the rear end. At least thats where I heard the noises, so I thought it was my gears, but I took my 3rd member out today and gears are fine, checked for chipped teeth on the spider gears, ring and pinion and everything is ok, no signs of metal shavings either.
Prior to this I was hearing a whining sound when taking off (accelerating) from being at a full stop.
A whinning sound coming from the rear or front not sure, but never heard it before. I was told maybe my carrier bearing but I've never had that go out on me so not sure how to diagnose that. Or it could be the tranny?
I moved my truck today to my garage, I probably moved it about 60ft and no noises at all, I didnt want to risk it and take it around the block.
    Thanks peeps
    Help PLEASE!.

Are you missing any leafs? My first Tacoma lost three - I was down to the main leaf on one side. Scary.

No idea on the clanking. The whining sound is most likely your carrier bearing. If there is any play in the drive shaft replace it. Sounds like a PITA to replace in a second gen. Hope yours is easier.

I heard carrier bearing or my torque converter in my tranny. My carrier bearing looks fine, havent pulled it apart but theres no signs of it being loose.

Isn't the torque converter supposed to lock up in 5th gear? That might be a easy way to check it.
