If you want low shedding, a shorthair pointer is probably more in your lane. The wirehairs shed, but certainly not as bad as other breeds like some types of shepherds.

Calmness is mostly learned in gundogs, not bred into them. Temperament starts when they are born, so if you are going with a rescue for a hunter, make sure they already have the temperament you want. Takes too long to retrain them to be effective.

And the general disclaimer, every dog is different, just like people are different. The breed is important for general traits, but you need to feel out the dog more than the breed.

I'm talking WPGs, not GWPs. Different breed, look the same. From everything I've read they (WPGs) are better "house dogs" than GWPS.

Lol he's such a baby. Though he likes to act tough to new comers. As soon as he warms up to you, he's the biggest suck.

As mentioned rescue dogs can be hit or miss, Frogsauce gave some good advice IMO. If your not already reading it uplandjournal.com is a good source of information and sometimes you can pick up rescues there. Not sure how much experience you have with pointers but it is usually a lot more work training than flushers. Although I do miss the style and beauty of a point I also like the "if it flies it dies" aspect of a flusher.

One of the best hunting dogs I have ever seen is a Lab, he is pure hell on pheasants in SD. But he lives in SD and sees thousands of birds a year and it does take birds to make a bird dog. A lab does live to please you and that makes life easier but I understand what your saying.

I no longer hunt waterfowl and pretty much live to hunt ruff grouse and pheasants. And use a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They are the smallest of the retrievers and rare. A pup will cost you about $3k and there is normally a waiting list to get one. I've been around the breed for more than 25 years now and they will train you instead of you training them if your not careful, they are extremely intelligent. There favorite radio station is WIFM Whats in it for Me, unlike a Lab. But still make a great companion, many breeders have been breeding for temperament the last decade or so.

My boy is getting old and I am struggling with what to get next. Hard to imagine not having another Toller. Once they became AKC recognized everyone seemed to discover them all of a sudden and demand has gone through the roof. They will hunt well and hunt hard.

I have hunted over several French Britts the last couple of years and may end up going with one of those. Or an English Setter again (Ryman or Lew?!) Or springer. Or....

I grew up in a house with labs and wire haired. Wasn't a big fan of the pointers we had. Great to hunt with and were pretty calm in the house but still had the typical neurotic pointer craziness. My dad has switched to English setters and a lab for his bird dogs. He seems to like that combo better

Why do dogs kick their leg when you scratch them in te right spot?

Depending on which half of his body I scratch, either back leg will kick.

My german will do that or she will nibble the top of her front paws or my arm really fast like she's itching it. She does it when we scratch her or she will kick her back legs.
