One of my best friends was with USMC, (I think I have the unit correct) A Co 5th Tanks on Okinawa & later in RVN.

He lost a tank (M-60 Patton I think) in RVN to a sapper but made it out of RVN in one piece with limited injuries.

Congrats to you tankers ... you guys were a welcome site in the field to the grunts ... :D

BTW ... in RVN, if I spent any time on the ground outside the wire ... I made sure to stay away from the tanks as they were "magnets for RPG & small arms fire".

USN Chief, retired almost as many years ago as years I was on active duty. The civilian sector has been good to me and finishing those degrees while on Active Duty has paid off.

Each year several of us retired military get together and hunt pheasant in SD. I am the only enlisted man in the group now that the other one from the Army special forces has sadly passed away. The Commander, Captain and Admiral (O-8) all drive Honda Ridgeliner's.

UMMMMMM....That is not necessarily true. To say that a Cadet out ranks an E-4-5 much less an E-7 is an accident waiting to happen. A Cadet does not officially hold rank until commissioned. They are ranked based on their years at the academy which is relevant to other cadets and the Academy. Do not misunderstand what I am saying, They should be treated with respect as our future leaders, I agree they visit other units to learn and be mentored. A majority will at some point hold a commission, at which point they will carry rank relevant to active duty members. Hopefully the Cadet had positive experiences in which they learned from and will grow to be an asset to the officers core and the CG as a whole.

You can claim it an accident waiting to happen, but the fact remains they are on the pay scale above enlisted ranks. Authority to give orders is another thing entirely and is usually specifically withheld by policy.

I appreciate what you are saying but there should be some clarification to go with it if you can clear it up. The Officer Pay Scale includes Warrant grade, O-1E through O-3E and O-1 through O-8 in under 2 years to 6 years. There is no inclusion of 1st year through 1st class cadet.

I have to agree with this. A cadet is still a student and therefore not a member of the active military, meaning their rank is irrelevant. A cadet has no rank over any enlist just like a civilian off the street holds no rank. There isn't even a pay chart for the cadets.
