When I was just a kid, I worked at a gas station for a blow hard ass-bag who thought his wrecker was all that. I was driving a 1969 4x4 suburban at the time, that has a granny low that was unbelievable. It would idle up any hill I ever pointed it at. Any way, ass-bag was braggin' about his wrecker and how with dualies it could out pull me. So we hooked 'em up one night and I dragged his ass across the station parking lot.

The "secret" is of course traction. He had heavy duty high mileage (hard compound) tires, and even though he weighed more, and had dualies, I had some cheap ass soft compound tires that I had let some air out of when he wasn't looking, and they just had better grip.
Vehicular tug-of-war is like arm wrestling... It not who is the strongest, it's who has the best technique...

Take 'em on! What the hell! If you win, great! He'll shut up. If you lose... Do you really care what they think?

The 5 speed that came in those full sizes is pretty weak for a manual tranny behind a v8. If you have an auto and can get a jump on him on pavement, you might be able to get him to tear 1st gear out of it. If he dumps the clutch while in 4x4 and rolling backwards.

Why get into a pissing match with him? We had a couple guys at the station do this once and it ended up poorly for the guy in the Ford F150. Sure it was fun to watch since I wasn't involved and had nothing to lose. Sounds like the 80 techs are in the same situation. Best you learn now that getting baited into arguments with the likes of your co worker is a not worth the energy it takes to respond. Well... you probably outweigh him so that's an advantage. The locker will help some but it may not be necessary unless you spin in 4Lo. Is he a V8 or V6 and is he taller than you? If you are taller than him and he is a 2wd or leaves it in 2wd then you have very very good odds of winning. When the rope pulls tight between you two the shorter vehicle will get the back end lifted up a little so it has worse traction on the back tires and that weight gets put on the taller vehicle so it gains some extra traction. If you guys are close in height then that does matter much.
