I am new to the forum. I have a 02 dakota that I lifted and upgraded to larger tires, its not the best on gas. So I am looking at getting a second truck to drive with better mileage. I really like the regular cab 4x4 4 cyl 5 speed tacoma. I am looking at purchasing a new or certified truck. Just wanted to get some info from people who have them.. Figure that is the best way to see about the trucks is through actual consumer feedback. I just want a reliable 4x4 pickup but do not need a full size. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I got 21-22 mpg in mine (mixed driving) - if that's any help.

I hated the bench seat and there wasn't enough room in it for me. For me the AC was the ticket.

The claim is the auto trannies do better for MPG's. I get 19-21 MPG on my truck.

    That's for a the V6 - the 4 cyl, not so much.

The 5-speed auto on the V6 gets better milage and faster acceleration than the 6-speed manual, due to more thought-out ratios. The same doesn't hold true for the 4-cyl. The 4-speed auto is worse than the 5-speed manual for both milage and performance.

@Daveh1219: The configuration you want is bulletproof. Just take a test drive at a dealer and make sure you are satisfied with the truck's performance. Since you are coming from a Dakota (V8?), 159 hp pushing 3700 lb curb weight may seem anemic.

Awesome! Thanks for the posts guys. I appreciate it. I have a silverado right now as a 2nd truck...I know it may sound dumb to have two trucks. But the dakota I've had for about 5 years and done a lot to it. Its kind of at that point where I don't want to drive it all the time, keep the miles and salt off of it. My dakota is 5 speed manual with the v6 3.9 motor regular cab 4x4. So that is why the Tacoma is attractive to me because it is similar in size . I test drove the auto trans with the 4 cyl and it was alright.. But I do prefer a manual transmission because like you said @KenLyns it will pretty much be bulletproof. Or so I hope.
