So I was talking to my boss about old cars, and I mention how Ive been looking for a 2nd gen camaro. He tells me that he has a 71' camaro that he just got, and wants to sell because they just aren't his thing. He's giving me a GREAT DEAL so Im more than sure I am going to buy it. Just wondering if any of you guys are familiar with these cars and if anyone could point me in the right direction with either suggestions, plans, first mods, etc. Any info would be much appreciated! I was thinking a charcoal with black… maybe white ss strips with american racing torq thrust IIs :D

Heres what the description of the car is:

71 Camaro New master cylinder, calipers, pads, shoes, rubber lines, reman 12.5:1 power steering box, new power steering hoses, front tires, all zero miles. Atlas multi leaf rear springs with approx 1000 miles, TH 350 with RV shift kit and Z28 converter approx 1000 miles, solid alum body mounts, marine 325HP hyd roller 350 short block needs rebuilt, headliner excellent. seatcovers good, missing left front headlight bezel, marker light and console, all other lights, trim, latches, etc. there. Garaged for last 12 years.

So first thing you need to do is grow a mullet, start drinking bud, and wear nothing but wife beaters with jean shorts.

    But seriously:D

Sub'd, if I were you I'd throw an LS/T56 in it and have a fun redneck mobile.

I like the look of the L88 hood on 2nd gens. [IMG] and classic Cragar SS rims.

Plan on spending more than you thought you would have and realize that you'll never get the money out of it.

Hmm, don't take my advice because I have no idea what these are worth but I wouldn't pay more than a grand for it, and even that's pushing it.

Any rust? If it's a solid car and with all those parts included, I'd say it's worth about $2-$3k maybe more? It's a desirable body style and would be easy to resell if you change your mind, IMO. Check out camaros.net first. That site focuses more on original restorations vs high dollar pro-touring builds on the sites mentioned above.

NO RUST. Floor pans and interior are in great shape. Seats may have a tear or two in them but nothing major. My boss got it from one of his employees who needed money. Its been his project for the last decade. SLOWLY working on it. I work at a boat shop, the owner is the lead technician for MasterCraft and Malibu boats

Having no rust is a HUGE plus. You're lucky. Now, I'd start by getting it running and driving first.

Thanks! Im getting it for a grand! The motor that is coming with it came out of an old boat. Im not sure if I should use use it, or get another. Got any suggestions on what setup would be best?

I'd buy it for a grand without thinking twice. If I were you, I'd just stick with a small block to save some coin for now. How much will it cost you to get it rebuilt at your job? I've seen freshly rebuilt 350 longblocks for $600 or so with warranty on Craigslist.

    OR

You can brand new for $1200 shipped which is a tremendous deal.

Not sure how much it would be to rebuild it. I kinda just wanna start with a fresh crate 350 or just build one. What's the difference between a marine engine anyways?

Since you work at a boat shop, I was hoping that you'd tell us that. :D

I think the torque curve is different than from a street motor. Can be adjusted with a different cam.

I haven't been to work in a while due to finals week. All of my time had been in books. I'll keep everyone posted. Any pros and cons for a 383 stroker?

    back to bone stock.
i had a 71. it was my dads and when i started to drive, my mom dug it out of a leaf pile and said.."here is your car".

it was the barebones car. stock 307 with a very anemic 200 hp. as a first car it was awesome.

i ended up rebuilding a 350 4 bolt main for the thing and it got quite fast.

Can't think of any cons for a stroker motor except that they can get expensive.

Since you picked this solid car up for only a grand, I'd consider looking into a lsx swap.

    This,
People are parting out ls1 cars all over the place

Or you could find a carb'ed 350 for cheap,

If it were me id get it running reliable for cheap then make the body look presentable, not award winning, a 20/20 body (looks good from 20 feet away going 20 mph) then have fun cruising.
