Check Engine Light Code

I have a 2002 v6 taco and my check engine light came on. I stopped by advanced today and got them to check the computer code for my check engine light. The code was T1135. Supposedly it means an Air Flow Heater malfunctioning or something like that. The guy at advanced said it might be the O2 sensor and I did not want to pay $200 for an oxygen sensor when my truck is running fine. I am getting ~18 mpg(even better than 2 months ago) and no stuttering or misfiring. I have recently done the deck plate mod and capped off both silencers. I am not sure what to do about the sensor. My dad said that I need to uncap the silencers because it has changed the way the air flow enters the engine(which makes sense). But my taco sounds soooooo sweet i dont want to change it. Any advice on what to do or how to fix the check engine light?

 

so do i need to spend the money on a new O2 sensor or is my truck going to be ok without one for a while?

Ditto. Yes you should replace it. If the cat overheats for over rich or lean condition it will melt down the matrix inside. If you are complaining about a O/2 sensor you will be screaming over replacing a cat.

I just had this same problem and also went to Advanced to get the code read but their machine said it was the Mass Air Meter (same 1135 code). Could their machine be incorrect or are there multiple 1135 codes for the Tacoma? I ask since you placed a "P" in front of the one you mention here.

well i know with the code i had i replaced my o2 sensor on the passenger side and the check engine light hasnt come back on but chris4x4 is a great help and he can more than likely tell you more than i can

 

My first thought when the light came on was that it was some sort of emissions sensor but I wanted to be 100%. Maybe I should take it to Auto Zone for a second opinion. It's not running any different but I sure don't like that light staring at me.

 

yeah mine wasnt running too much different either...my mileage dropped maybe .5 or 1 mpg but i didnt think it was too significant because i thought it was just me driving differently in the city but i couldnt stand it lighting up the cab every night

 

So I went to Auto Zone last night for a second opinion and this time the code came up the same (P1135) but saying "Air/Fuel sensor heater circuit response. Bank 1 Sensor 1"

Two out of three works for me so I'll be changing out my passenger side O2 sensor this weekend. Thanks for all the help guys.
