I spent the weekend doing just that! Pulling cars, clearing trees from roads, lots of ice drifting and donuts. Very productive weekend. The winch came in handy multiple times!

Drove about 100 miles yesterday. Love field to Lake Highlands to Haslet and then back here to Dallas. 170 going from 114 to I35 was about the worst I've seen. The truckers were pulling off I35 and literally parking on 170 so they could walk to the Loves truck stop. Must have been 100 semis parked out there. The entire intersection was gridlocked because one truck was stuck straddling the intersection. I went around it, hopped the curb, and took the median/field up about half a mile and then re-entered the road.

I have found the arch nemesis of the Tacoma though. It's called "cobble stone ice". It's the shit that forms on overpasses and gets a ton of ruts/holes/pits carved into it. Seriously bumpy stuff even if you have a lift. Like, 6-8" deep at times so your suspension has to work quite a bit. On overpasses for exits it's easy to spot far out. But for bridges that are just for drainage....apparently not. I did a nice little 180 last night on 114 after just getting off 170. Lucky me the highway is 4 lanes wide at that point and there weren't any other cars around. I was going about 35-40 at the time and my girlfriend and I didn't see it. Didn't hit anything and nothing happened so we were lucky.

I was VERY surprised how little traction the truck has on the flat ice though. In our apartment parking lot my truck literally needed 4WD to get out of the parking spot. I had it in 2WD and just idling forward about 5 feet it started to spin the right rear tire at a slow, constant speed. 100% of the power just left the truck through that tire. Never wanted lockers more than this past weekend.

Next Tacoma I shan't make the same mistake. I need lockers.

I want lockers not for actual driving/moving but more for the sake of not getting stuck to begin with. When I had to enter the grass/snow area of the median I was a little concerned I might get stuck so I just made sure I didn't stop or slow down till I touched down on road again. Hell, I'd probably be happy with LSD in the front and rear. But open diff's front and rear is about as bad as it gets. The Sport doesn't have ATRAC either. :(

Yep 1 tire fire is no bueno on this shit. I took mine out of 4 wheel a couple time just to see what it was like and said screw this. But i never have to use my locker in snow or ice. Even pulling people. May help a pre runner get around though.

I think the Pre-2009 models had LSD but the other models have "Auto LSD" which is a joke. It's just terrible. And it isn't even possible to use it in 4WD Hi. I have done the yellow wire mod for times when it gets serious but it only works in 4WD LO

My air locker got a TON of use this weekend. I drove 120 miles in that shit. Lockers do make donuts easier in parking lots also :D

Fuck that.....280whp in a 2800lb turbo charged car ON ICE? I can't think of anything else more deadly. If I crash that bitch I'll be PISSED! It's 20 years old and PERFECT. I'd be doing the automotive community a disservice by violating it. :(
You ended up taking out that ratchet/bang appliance you had back there and going ARB?

PS: Why did Toyota not use a normal removable diff cover for ours so it wasn't a complete bitch to swap out?

I'm pretty sure that even if he was dead he wouldn't sell that thing.

Yeah I got rid of it a while ago. I think I only had the lock wrong for like 3 months before I tore it up to shit. And swapping out diff parts isn't too terrible. Just gotta pull the entire 3rd member out. It isn't that difficult really.

It's a 3rd gen. 1993 with 38k on the clock right now. Got most of it in order now. Had to put some money into it (duh) to get it proper but it's a 20 year old car so I expected that. Now I think I'm ready to hit the track with it.

I've wanted this car for 10 years. I drove the Tacoma to Los Alamos New Mexico and then drove both cars back (took some friends with me to drive the truck back). I won't sell this car for a while probably another year or so. I've replaced a lot of the aged things like pillow balls, diff and suspension bushings etc. It's close to perfect or will be soon! Call me in a year and I might be moving on ;)
