I'm pretty sure I just walked by you by the train tracks on campus. I was hoping you were going to turn right and go towards me but you went left. I was going to wave if you did lol

Need some advice. I was offered a straight across trade. My 2002 Honda VFR800 with ABS in exchange for a clean '89 4runner with lots of new parts, fairly clean body and the removable hardtop. 210k but well maintained, 3.0 v6, will need tires next year, small rust spot on fender.
Could make a sweet crawler in exchange for something I rarely get to ride due to parenthood. Not sure though, cuz my wife WILL NOT get rid of her bike and she will make me feel horrible for making her ride alone from now on.

What's the resale value on the bike?

In my past experience 'lots of new parts' usually means those will keep coming along..I.e- more money you will be spending on repairs. Have you looked around on CL to see other values?
You already have a wheeling vehicle, why another?

Save or borrow some coin & buy the 4runner flat out. The minute you don't have the option to ride that VFR, you'll be missin' it - especially if the wifey still rides. Your head is just cloudy because of this whack-assed weather(I can relate). ;)

I don't know anything about your situation, but I think you'd miss that 02 VFR.. das a sweet bike homie.

The biggest reason for thinking about this trade is that I and up spending a fair amount on the bike to keep it maintained, and I rarely get to ride it anymore. The runner would be a vehicle that I could be working towards making a dedicated Trail rig. Plus the wife could use it during really bad weather instead of having to drive her Corolla. But, as mentioned above, I know where my head goes at the beginning of summer when I see a bunch of other dudes riding around on their motorcycles. It is just so hard for the wife and I to get out for a ride because we have to line up a babysitter first. It kind of kills the mood when you can't just go jump on the bikes and go.

Then there is also the fear of having an accident on a motorcycle, and not being around for my kids in the first place.

My honest take on this topic? Both are toys. Logic, reason & practicality go out the window. You buy it because you want it, you sell it because you don't. In this case, it seems you don't want the VFR any longer and you want the rock crawler. Maybe not to the degree you have in the past but it seems that pendulum has swung to some degree so go for it and if you hate life you're not stuck for ever and ever. I quit riding bikes in the street and it was probably the wisest decision I've ever made and I don't even have children. That rock crawler can be something that you can most likely enjoy with your whole family rather than something that could prevent you from being there at all. Probably being the turd in the punch bowl with that take on the topic but there it is.

Now that I read this I don't feel as bad about what I said because you're starting to think like an old guy like me which is evident by this statement. :D

My guess is the wife will also start to 'age' in her sage wisdom as it applies to motorcycles a little bit more after you don't have one for a while. It could very well be that just your bike being there is preventing her from seeing what she may already know subconsciously.

That's what I'm thinking too. Right now a motorcycle, as much as you both enjoy them, doesn't seem practical. Doesn't mean you can't buy another a few years down the road when your kids can take care of themselves. But IMO I think the 4runner would be a good choice because you can enjoy it with the entire family.

My wife hasn't been on her bike in a year and a half and I took it out probably three times last year.
In her defense, she couldn't ride due to injuries from her first baby delivery, and was pregnant all last summer.
I have been looking for a four wheeler to trade my bike for but my wife is adamant about not selling hers. I don't think that she has had enough chances to ride it, which I can understand make sure not want to sell hers. Plus she has never had an accident, or even a close call on her bike. I wrecked mine once going only 25 mph, and was lucky that I was wearing a helmet. I wouldn't be sending this message right now if I hadn't. It opened my eyes as to how quick you can find yourself in a position that you have no control over.

You wouldn't be the first guy to arrive at this crossroads. Apparently having children of your own has an affect on priorities - so I've heard.. :)

c'mon Travis, we haven't even been able to take a ride together yet man!

i see where you're coming from though and agree with Ost. they are both toys and it's more of a "what do you want more" kind of decision. just keep in mind, if you go with the runner and it becomes a trail rig, are you going to be able to use that more than what you would have used the bike in the summer?

    food for thought
