Put a hot water bottle at the foot of your bed before going to sleep, it'll stay warm through the night. I usually keep my heater at 62F at night. Without the waterbottle, it's just another wool blanket on top. :p

We're okay at night time, it just super cold downstairs. And our couch is right next to one of the windows.

Speaking of upstairs/downstairs. After rethinking everything I'd rather not deal with installing because of the 2nd story :D So if anyone knew any good prices for windows + install, let me know :D

Well, if you don't plan on opening your windows, you could always shrink wrap seal them. You just can't open the windows until spring, at least then you can wait until the summer to work on them.

If you're looking to make your heater work more efficiently, putting a fan at the top or bottom of the stairs to blow air up or down to mix the cold and hot. You can set it on a timer like an hour before you wake up so it doesn't have to run all night keeping you up. :tumbleweed:

You can also close the registers on the second floor and leave the ones downstairs open only so it warms up downstairs first. If your thermostat is set properly things should be warm in time for when you wake up.

Lastly, I have the Filtrete 3M-50 wifi thermostat (I got this on ebay for 70 bucks) (Filtrete recently ended their partnership with the OEM and no longer sells these units), however, it's actually a rebranded Radio Thermostat Company of America model CT-30 which is still available for $149. Honeywell also has comparable units too that work pretty well and are available at Home Depot to try out.

The nice thing about having a wifi thermostat is that you are able to control settings from your smart phone. This includes developing heating/cooling schedules on your phone and then submitting them to the thermostat's memory as well as being able to turn off your thermostat from wherever you are, like in another country.

    Quite fancy.

I'll have to look into those thermostats. Man, the uses! Turn the heat up without getting out of bed!

    I don't sound lazy, do I?

    Inorite? ;)

I was thinking that I could wire another one up in my taco once I get a flippac and install my webasto heater. Generally the 3M50 requires internet access if you want to use the RTCA app, but there's another app that can control it directly, but lacks the scheduling capability you'd get by using the cloud services.

The interesting thing about the CT30 and the CT80 from RTCA is that they have an open API that people can use to develop their own apps from.

There's another company www.ourhomespaces.com that actually develops their own app and works with CloudBeam's home automation UNSAP Wifi Module. Our Home Space's app has with a different feature set and interface, and also includes other cloudbeam services like:

    • lighting
    • cameras
    • solar
    • water heaters
    • locks
    • power circuits
    • and equipment (sump pump, doors, gates, etc)

The whole idea of home automation is pretty wild. :)

But I'm just happy that I don't have to get out of my tipi to change the thermostat anymore.

Get a nest. Much nicer. Plus, you'll actually save money when you're not home-it sense that and turns the heat/cool off.

You can control it from your phone or browser.

I love a freezing cold house haha. I get mad when my brother turns on the heater and lets it run during the night. I got a comfy blanket I throw on during the winter and I sleep 10x better with it than I do with my two thin sheets during the warmer weather.
