I have a 2010, 2.7 litre 4 cyl., Prerunner, Access Cab, 5 speed manual. It has 35,000 miles. I bought it new. I have faithfully changed oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Currently using Amsoil 5W-30.

This past weekend the engine began knocking when fully warmed up. I have run 87 Octane since I bought the truck. the knock occurs under light throttle when accelerating. It is present between 1,700 and 1,900 rpm. It is not a ping. It is a solid knock. If I cross my left foot over and press lightly on the brake to create drag, I can keep it knocking as long as I don't let the rpm increase or decrease. Feathering the throttle when the vehicle is sitting still in neutral results in no knocking at the same rpm.

I am wondering if this engine has a knock sensor? Is the timing adjustable? Has there been a problem with rod or main bearings?

I have a scan tool and no codes have ever shown up since new.

I hate that the "shop manual" is too expensive to purchase. I always buy a shop manual for all my new vehicles. but not for this one...

Yes, I will try 93 octane once I have used enough fuel to make it possible. I have already put in a bottle of Lucas Octane improver to see if it would make a difference. No change in symptoms.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced this problem and rectified it.

Mine has done it too. A higher octane will rid the knocking.

Did you buy the truck new, or just get it recently?
