I've eaten an oyster... Something fantastic about those things.

Did you rent the book in New England?

    Either way...

    1. Buy a digital recorder.

    2. Call the collection agency back. Record the WHOLE conversation. Do not tell them that you are recording the conversation. In the state of Texas is it legal to record phone conversations as long as one of the parties is aware of it, and that would be YOU. Do NOT get angry or argue with them about ANYTHING they may say or accuse you of doing (or not doing). Show them pure politeness and civility. Be polite but firm. Tell them that you are not to be contacted by phone anymore but by US mail only. Tell them that you are disputing the charge. Ask for the name of the company, their address, their phone number, their account number for you, and who you should mail correspondence to.

    3. Write them a letter. Date the letter and tell them that you are disputing what they claim you owe. Request them to provide:
    a. The amount they claim you owe
    b. Any and all information and data they have on you and the supposed debt
    c. The original creditor's information, including their name, address, account number, etc
    d. Proof that the credit collection agency that contacted you is liscnesed to collect debt in Texas
    e. Response within 30 days.

    4. Mail the letter certified through USPS.

    5. Wait for response.

    6. If no response is given, on Day 31 next day mail a letter stating that due to their refusal to comply with your dispute and request for information as defined by the FCRA, the debt is not considered valid. Any attempt to report or collect on said debt will result in civil litigation against the credit collection agency.

There is a LOT that goes into fighting off a debt collector, and this is general advice and advice only. It took me about a year of research and a year to get my credit score to damn near perfect. PM me if you have any questions.

It's just another credit collection agency. Law firm gets into the credit collection business and seeing the name of some crap law firm on the letterhead intimidates alleged debtors.
