garmin vs. tomtom

OK..So ive got a perfectly good, and well trusted Garmin GPS, I love it, and I had custom mounted it in my dashboard a few years back. Well, I got tired of it, so i took it out, and mounted my gps on my windshield in the drivers upper corner. I like it, but it just feels like the thing is "in your face" all the time when driving, when its really not (its just kinda big) and the mount is kinda awkward. Ive been thinking about buying a new one(excuse is i'm going to mount it on the bike), but im not sure what one to get. Ive read reviews on the tom tom, and garmin, and the tomtom's seem to have horrible reviews, while most of the garmins have awesome reviews. Guess im just trying to figure out if I want to drop another $150ish on a new Gps or not. Opinions? What does the TW use?

 

Tom Tom is garbage.

my sister has a tom tom, and her mom has a tom tom, and they hate it. i have a garmin nuvi 260w......and its nice as hell.....no probs with it so far. go with garmin.

 

I'm thinking about getting one since me and my friends used and Garmin to get to six flags. I guess they both do the same thing though so I'll get whichever is cheaper.

 

like I said, ive got a garmin and I love it..just wondering which one to go with. I like the nuvi 205, and its on sale for $115 from best buy right now..Im just looking for a little bit thinner one i suppose.

 

i have a tomtom and dont have any issues minus it taking a while to get a signal but i dont have the antenna hooked up

 

I've got a Tom-Tom 1 that I love. It's simple and easy to use...no complaints here.

 

I have a Garmin 255W, absolutely love it.

 

Have TomTom-One, Garmin 250, Garmin 260, and an old Garmin i3. Prefer the Nuvi's, mainly due to better directional indication to nearby POIs. TomTom gives distance but not direction (ahead or behind in route) to POIs. But it is more customizable than the Garmins (colors, voices).

 

I have a Garmin Nuvi-something and love it. My only complaint is that the speaker went out and the warranty is up. I only used it for BlueTooth, though, and when I installed the Parrott last month my problem went away. Still.. crappy little speaker.

My father-in-law doesn't like his Tom Tom.

 

Garmin nuvi. Sticker-mount for the suction cup in the center of the dash, tucked down near where the windshield meets. Doesn't obscure much of any road view, just part of the hood.

I've been consistently amazed at the map detail in obscure places. Like in the middle of Sawtooth national forest.

Anything you get is only a tool, tho, and you'll have to learn to interpret what it tells you in conjunction with what you see with your own eyes out the window. No GPS is perfect.

 

We 4 Garmins in the family and love them. I have one that is old but still works awesome. We also have the newer Nuvi's. I have tried others like Megellan but those suck. Never tried a Tom Tom.

I've heard bad things about TomTom but I don't know from experience. The Garmin is great.

 

I have a Garmin nuvi 250 and it works good. Also, I have used the nuvi 205 and I like it a little better. Heres a link to the 205 on newegg.com. Its a good site with lots of reviews and great customer service. I buy all my pc parts from there.

We have a Garmin Nuvi 660 - Love it!!

It gets swapped back-n-forth between vehicles.

 

Tom Tom here & no complaints, shows everything.

 

I just used my Dads Tom-Tom yesterday. Worked fine-but I prefer my Garmin 265WT. It was not as intuitive for me even tho you have more options for customizing.

It was also fairly slow to aquire a signal and got confused a couple of times with voice outputs...(Like saying 2 miles insted of 20).

I'll take my Garmin any day!!

 

Agreed, the TomTom sometimes calls distance to turns incorrectly (usually is closer than it says). Just on certain roads. Garmin, on the other hand, is more precise but shifts units quickly, so you have to listen closely.

 

tom tom work great for me.
