well actually you have to use your 96 ECU..cause its for a manual tranny. The New ECU will be for an auto...and probably ABS..

The ECU has nothing to do with the truck interior harness though..like heat controls..windows..ect..

so you should be fine. You'll just have all electric windows, locks, and an electronic heat control.

    make sense?

^Ok, I didn't know that! So is there another "module" of some sort that centrally controls the truck interior harness items... or are they just simple electrical switches?

(I'm starting to think I can really pull this off!)

yea..the module is your fuse box :p haha

all just mainly electic relays and stuff..

i mean..it the same harness i pulled from my truck and swapped over. You just won't be doing that..you'll leave everthing installed in stock location and just put the battery in and your good. And swap the ECU and probably delete ABS. and you have to re weld the rear body/bed mounts.

THen you have to put all the pedals in and install the clutch stuff on the body.

    shouldn't be TOO bad.

But..take a lot of work and more importantly space and time. But i bet if you had a full week off, you could get it done mostly i bet. Not that you need it for DDing so even if you didn't get it 100% you could finish it over then weekends and nights.

Then you have the front fenders to swap and grill and hood. Headlights and corner lights. Shouldn't be too bad.

but color's won't match at all so gonna have to paint them..or..just vinyl wrap the truck which is what id do.

So yea, totally do able :D haha be a freaking fun project.

So, I've got a buddy here at work that has a shop that he started with his son, on the side. I think I'll contact him and see how much it would cost to use his shop (and labor) to help me complete this project. I think the trick will be figuring out as many small details as possible before I even start... like the pedals... how do I mount the clutch pedal? Can I just swap the auto for the manual brake pedal? Things like that.

Plus, I might call my old buddy Monte up to see if he can swing down from Wy!:D

Thanks man! Honestly, I am really liking these tires. They seem to grip rocks like a MT but are awesome in packed snow and ice, and they wear better. I've got over 7,000 mile on mine and they are at 14/32 (down from 17/32). They have seen 4 or 5 moderate to difficult wheeling trips in that time and I've cruised them across 5 states on a long road trip. They've just done everything well.

that would be a fun trip! :D haha

pedals should swap. You'd have to lose the auto brake pedal and put in your 96 brake and clutch. The main support bar im willing to bet has the mounts and everything already cause there is no reason toyota would make two different ones. i mean hell, even on my 2wd body they had everything for the 4wd lined out just need the bolt holes punched out.

this is where like pouring over Saftydawgs build will be handy as he did a manual conversion on his double cab.

Which will probably be the hardest part of this whole ordeal.

    Lumpski,

I'm in the process of ordering a taco box from marlin or a built tacoma double case from inchworm. What is your opinion about inchworm? Any complaints? Thanks man, any input would be awesome

Wait... So would I use my old ECU, or do I have to use the new one? Sorry for all the questions... I'm easily confused

Hey! Overall, I am extremely happy with my Inchworm setup, but it's not without it's quirks.

    Pros:
You can't tell it's there over the road
    Multiple ranges for low
    2wd low

    Cons:
Some people have had trouble with the system leaking (I haven't and I've rebuilt mine once)
There is an issue that was discovered with the new double row Marlin bearing.
It's outlined here: Read through the whole thread and you'll get some details on the possible fix.

My opinion is that the Inchworm setup is better for oiling and Josh is very easy to work with. I'd give him a call and ask if he has switched to a Conrad style bearing first thing. One question, is this the built Inchworm setup you're referring to?
    http://www.inchwormgear.com/collections/transfer-case/products/built-tacoma-double-case-setup

That's the one I got, but it's not really a built system... it just has one adapter plate already fixed on it. the other half of the plate still needs to be assembled and the plate on the other side still needs to be installed. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it.

If you have any questions about the install or how the system works for wheeling or DDing, feel free to post up!

Thanks Lump, I am looking at that setup that you posted. I tried calling them today, no answer. I know they are moving shops so I'll try again tomorrow. I'm going to reread the link you provided. I'll make sure to ask if I have any questions!

Good god that is a lot of bearing talk! If I learned anything it seems like inchworm customer service is excellent. Looks like I will be calling inchworm again tomorrow. Hopefully I will get one with good bearings.

I'd say that's a good plan. Yeah, I tried calling today as well and couldn't get Josh either. If I were you, I'd be sure to talk with him about getting a different bearing... I think NorcalPR got the MRC 5290, in case it comes up. Like I said before, I like the way the inchworm adapter oils the crawlbox. I think that's important for getting lube to all the bearings early... especially when it's cold.

And let me know how everything develops for ya!

You have to swap your 96 ECU into the double cab body..

I won a photo contest! Roughly a dozen selections out of approx. 4500 entries. ...and the picture was taken from the truck on a wheeling trip!

Awesome, I can't wait to get back there and run that again (without icy death everywhere).

edit - we camped right at the turn to the right, straight ahead in the pic, great little spot.
