LOL nice, I have my own mig and tig, but have full access to press break, shears, benders, horizontal saws, copers, and a 40'X10' plasma at my work. one of these days I will have a garage to put a lathe and press in.

I want to hang out with your Uncle. Also my Wife is learning to weld and hopefully if she gets a job she can start going back to school to finish her welding degree.

Degree in welding? As in a BACHELORS in welding? Anytime your ol'lady wants to fuck around with my tig or mig let me know. She pays for consumables and she can go to town. All my shits portable.

I welded and fab'd for 6 years as a career (doesn include the shop I fucked around in when I was a young lad), before that I worked on cars. In between that I was doing CAD work which is what I am now doing. There is proper tech schooling for drill assignments, school cost something like 40-60k though. Those guys are super young and dont last long out on the water rigs. Make a hell of a lot of skrill though.

And yes, there are BA in Welding offered at most design university's, like ASU. Why anyone would waste 50-60k on a welding degree is beyond me though as this is purely for design and will not get you a job in the higher paying jobs as welder/fabers. It will however get you credit if you become a furniture or art maker. Getting certs is where its at though, and those can cost anywhere from 50 a ticket to 600 for a semester at MCC or GCC for G3/G4 certs.

60-70k a year? or 60-70/hr? Either way that is more than most fab shops pay welders and fitters. I am making 22/hr to draw and detail the shit they build with two degrees, years of in field exp, and cert...... I make 4-6/hour than the shop guys. It's a good thing I make 5-10 hrs of overtime every week. If I didn have my lady and the unwillingness to move to dakotas I would go get my G4 and work on the pipelines. Take home 100k easy.

As a side job though I make good coin. Ill post up some photo's of these planters I am going to build. Bit of time in them but my margins will be good. Could be better if it were not for the client being my girlfriends boss.

So, with this quarter's bonus, I think I can finally justify an RTT. Been looking at the Tepui Kukenam because it's the size I want and it's under $1000, plus I can pick one up local and not pay for shipping. Curious if anyone has any experience with the Tepui products locally and if there are any drawbacks (bad seams, leaks, bends, etc.)

    http://tepuitents.com/products/kukenam-roaring-mountain

I'm interested in opinions of you local guys that have a 2-3 person RTT already installed, and what you think of it. I know everyone will be slightly biased and want to defend their own, but I'd like to hear WHY you think it's the best. Mounting options, leaking, setup, ladder quality, wind durability, etc....

Thanks in advance. I've read lots of other posts about nearly every other type of RTT.

Yes she is going for a degree. I'm not sure if an associates or bachelors. She's doing it more just to have something new to learn, plus welding is a handy skill to have.

If she does anything I would go for the associates. The bachelors is not going to teach her how to manipulate puddles, where to source heat, what weld types to use at which junctions, what to cope, how to bevel, etc. etc. She can use the associate to then obtain certs if she chooses to go that route later on.

Now that I think about it she has to be getting an Associate Degree. She's going to MCC for it and I do remember that she is going over the basics first.

Well at least you will have his hotness, PW up there with you. Wait he is a PEEDOPHILE.....

Yeah, that's exactly what she should be doing. The BA is going to be for design, design process, etc. etc. not how to make sure the piece doesn fall apart. I have met a few people that had BA in Welding. Cant lay a consistent bead to save their life.

What would you chose? Diesel mechanics or welding/metal fab?

Both suck, so pick the less suck of both. Diesel eats up your skin, sense of smell, and strains your back. Welding melts your skin, loss of sense of smell and strains back as well. I have done both but had I stayed with the cars I would be making considerably more now, however I am on a path to make considerably more than that in the next 5 years with my degree.

Ahhhh that does eat that up pretty quickly. I would be content with 60-70k/ year. But I am working towards 80-90k within the next 5 years. Want 100k+ within 10. I know I can achieve that with my background, just need to get more experience on the pallet.

You have to REALLY like doing Metal fab to do it for a living and you are very limited on the amount you can make. IMO if you do welding go do pipeline welding. I come from a family that does Pipeline welding and natural gas compressors. I have uncles that Clear $300k being a welder. Trade off is he isn't home much and its not a glamorous job and hard.

I don't know much about diesel stuff other then its dirty and heavy job. The guy that built my light bar does that up in Alaska on those Ice Road trucks and does good money for only having to freeze for a month or two at a time.
