joint or seperate checking account

My responses are personal opinion, if you read my first post I said separate accounts work for some.

If the separate account gig works for you then that’s great. Do I get why you do this or why it works, No. Do I think this is a healthy way to handle your finances with your spouse, NOPE!

But again this is my personal opinion and you can either agree, disagree or in your case resort to calling me stubborn with a side sarcasm. I suppose I deserve this by suggesting I question the commitment of those who have separate accounts; maybe a personal opinion I could have kept to myself and thus apologize for that.

Sounds more like a business than a marriage to me. I've been married 27 years with a joint account. Separate fixes a symptom of a bigger problem.

Furthermore, what if she doesn't work? How will she deposit 50% of what she "owes" in a joint account?

Well obviously she is going to have to sell her blood or body and step it up a bit.

LOL. It is an example, dude. We both work, both our incomes are practically the same. Obviously that is not everyone's situation.

But running a household is a business. So is running much of life. We live in a capitalist society. There is no escaping that. Run it well with transparent accoutning and keep it in the black. It will make the fun parts of life more...fun and stress free.

We are talking about how to manage money, not how to run a marriage.

Now weddings, that is a business. My FIL said "beware the matrimonial-industrial complex." We laughed our asses off...

Screw that, I'm making the switch to Chai Tea tomorrow, growing a mustache and making the old lady get her own checking account. In additional I'll open up 2 more checking accounts so specific portions of our paychecks can be dispersed into each giving both of us freedom and allowing me to start a fund to support my new Chai Tea habit while still being able to pay the bills.

I'd find a new bank if you get charged fees. A lot of banks have totally free checking...just a thought.

So if you have separate checking accounts and you file as married and receive a return at the end of the year how is the money divided?

Do simple math and figure out who gets what percentage in which case the person who make more gets more?

In my opinion, no, that is potentially divisive and tiny-minded in the big picture. You just throw that into the joint household bucket or allocate it toward a planned expense or major purchase, like vacation, car, appliance, house painting, property taxes, or whatever your shrewd budget planning and discipline that you and your spouse engage in indicates.

But if you are doing your withholding correctly, you should have very little tax return unless you like giving Uncle Sam interest-free loans. I don't. I'd rather keep control of it to squeak out what little interest or alternative investment return I can get.

 

Well now that sounds like the proper response

 

Separate for everyday. Joint for household/large purchases. Been together 7 years, not married, living in sin, no financial problems to date.
