Yesterday I went to Toyota of Roswell, GA to get my oil changed. I spoke for a couple minutes with the service advisor, then as the advisor (a black man) is inspecting my truck he says, "You know where your from they sell these things in diesel." I have olive skin (family has ancestors from Egypt believe it or not) but I was born and raised Southern and have a pretty strong Southern accent, so I take offense to some fool thinking i'm a foreigner or unamerican. Now I consider myself a pretty chill guy too, but this irked the hell out of me. I asked him what he meant by saying "where your from" I think he realized he offended me and to save face he said "Oh you have a European accent, I thought you were European." European Accent:confused:? At this point I gave him an incredulous look, signed the paper work and let it be.

What do ya'll think? Was I being a little sensitive or was he really that ignorant?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I would say he is being ignorant. You were well within your rights to feel offended.

You should have asked him if he ate Fried Chicken for lunch...

Seriously though, other peoples' ignorance and/ or incompetence pisses me off WAY more than it should. Usually I just give them the "your an idiot" smile/ laugh, though.

I think you did exactly the right thing. You made it known that his comment was ignorant/stupid, and it was clear that he felt like an idiot. You didn't let it escalate into something more.

Like you, I'm a born and bred Southerner and proud of it. Unlike you, though, I'm just a plain-ol' white guy. I don't know how I'd react if I had to deal with stuff like this more often, but you did exactly what I'd like to think I would do.

Eh, the guy probably never finished high school. Most of the mechanics I've known (including my 2 brothers) can't even spell properly. Then again I've said dumber things over the years :)

I don't think he really meant anything negative about it, but then again he should know better than to say something like that. Especially since he's black.

Ehh..Not a smart comment for him to make...but I wouldn't get overly upset about it...It's just not worth the aggravation.

Simple slip of the tongue-I think his main point was trucks...he was just relating to you and made a foible. On the same note, I understand why it pissed you off-because his assumption was kind of a slap to your patriotism and your roots here in this Country. I can tell by his statement he didn't mean any harm at all.
The "fried chicken" comment on the other hand...

maybe he just had a brain fart. But you would think after talking with me for a couple minutes you could tell i'm not a foreigner! Actually, I left the USA for the first time this summer (medical mission trip to Trinidad)

because one would expect that the advisor, as a minority, would be a little more versed than to label some one else (me) as not only a minority but also unamerican.

that said, he probably was just trying to talk about trucks and let that slip.
