I haven't been to the Arizona yet(on the bucket list), but I did visit the wall in DC. Brought tears to my eyes seeing all the names of those lost and MIA. Very moving experience. What really impressed me was seeing a family at the wall and the Dad explaining to the kids about the Memorial and all the names listed had Given their lives for their country, and the kids listened and weren't running around. They showed respect and it was great to see.:oldglory:

I like the fact that you need to actually need to do a little walking to visit the wall. The closest Metro stops are a ways away.

I toured the Arizona monument in the 90's .... inspiring. What was eerie was the audience at the showing of the attack footage that you can watch prior to heading out to the monument -- the majority were Japanese tourists! Felt strange sitting there with them.

Been to the memorials in DC also. Looking at the Vietnam wall made me appreciate that my dad steered me into the Navy. He served on three different battleships in WWII and knew that aside from better food and schools I'd be a bit safer on a ship in Vietnam. So I spent my tour off the coast (USS Enterprise) loading bombs on jets 12 hours each night. An 18 year old grows up REAL fast that first night on the flight deck.

I've got a LOT of respect for you guys that were on the ground, in the jungles. Thanks for your service.

Great story on Bud, Jim! Gotta love the respect and tradition that comes together to honor our comrades in arms.

I was just on the outside of the VN era - was in the last year group to get a draft number - 51 - to get classified - 1A - but no draft took place in '73 as they weren't in need of anyone at that point so I headed off to college and then into Army ROTC.

I've been to the VN memorial numerous times, to Arlington both to visit and to bury friends/colleagues, and to the other war memorials in DC. I helped in wreath-laying ceremonies at the American Cemetery in Tunisia many times, too. I've never been to Hawaii but want to get to the Arizona memorial as well as to the Normandy American Cemetery.

The C.O. (Mr. Douglas) of the USS Dewwy said he had never seen his ship or crew so squared away as they were for Mr. buds visit. You got to love it.:)

I have a couple of good friends on the wall and in Arlington as well. I also have 2 uncles in Arlington.

I love going to Arlington and placing flowers on the graves of loved ones. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns is also a moving ceremony.

    Evening all:
Just got the puter back; AGAIN! It wouldn't let me log in, just like before.
    Maby time to replace it???

Interesting about the Russian helicopters, Capt. may have a good point about why they went that route.

    Good read on Bud!

Humm! Smilies seem to be working now.

Agreed. Great for the crew to hear first hand some of their heritage. WIN-WIN equation.

I'm sure it also made Bud's passing easier and more meaningful for his family as well. :oldglory:

What a great story ... Thanks again, Jim ... we needed that around here. ;)

Good morning. We may get snow tomorrow but it looks like rain for us.

I need, and will, go to the doctor today. My knee is hurting, not too bad, and getting worse today that yesterday. I think I hurt it cleaning bathrooms yesterday. [IMG]

    Do I smell gun porn????!!!

Morning everyone! I've been fighting some type of stomach bug since last Sunday - wasn't really bad but I've just been really tired - been coming home from work, falling asleep and then getting up to go to bed. Finally feeling better today.

Looks like we're in for a good amount of snow tomorrow - upwards of 6 to 8 inches I think. Sounds like a good night to sit by the fire and relax!

Thanks...we got some snow flurries last night. The 24 hours prior to that we got our normal dose of Palmer wind. Comes down off the Knik Glacier ... average 35 mph with gusts to 60+. Snow in the forecast for this afternoon through the weekend. But temps stay below 25F for highs. That's good...had enough freezing rain stuff. In short we're getting back to "normal" ... Not that there's really a normal to weather in Alaska. ;)
