Transmission not holding on hills

My '08 manual v6 will not hold on a hill without the parking brake on - engine off, in gear. It will pop back a foot or so each time. My dealer tells me this is "normal" but agrees it is unusual to be considered normal. Anyone else have this problem? Should I be pushing for warranty service on this or is it "an enhancement"?

 

Usually 1st but the same happens in reverse as well.

 

Maybe a dumb question, but why are you leaving it in gear with the engine off on a hill? Why not put it in park and set the brake?

 

ummmm manuals dont have "park"

 

It's a manual transmission. Every other manual I've had (including earlier Tacomas) would hold it in place without the parking brake. This one won't, even on a minor slope like my driveway.

Yup - it's lurch, stop, lurch, stop, lurch......Usually about a foot or less each time. Doesn't happen every time but does most times.

First off you should never park a vehicle with a manual transmission, on an incline, without the parking brake applied AND the transmission in gear (first or rev).

You should never leave the truck parked on an incline of any kind, with only the transmission in gear and the parking brake not engaged.

If your parking brake is properly adjusted and you use these rules of thumb, you will not have an issue.

 

To add to my previous post, the reason your truck is moving a few feet at a time is because..

When you leave the truck in drive and parked on an incline the only thing holding your truck back is the compression that has been built up in the engines cylinders. All engines leak down, but the leak down rate will vary depending on many variables. when your engine reaches a critical point at which the cylinder pressure is not enough to hold the vehicle from rolling, it will roll forward/back until the engine can build up enough compression again to hold the truck back.

Also, when you turn the engine off, not all of the valves will be closed, so this further amplifies the problem by allowing a few of the cylinders to not hold cylinder pressure at all.

To sum it up in a nut shell, never truck your engine to hold back your truck.

 

Engine is off. I was just trying to avoid using the parking brake. As I first said, I've always (40 years of driving manuals) been able to leave my vehicle (engine off) on a slight incline without the parking brake. I'm guessing SC4333 would say I've been lucky; perhaps I have.

 

why would you not use a parking brake on a manual in a inclined parked position as a safety precaution. that makes two us who think your lucky

 

Just trying to help out, and give some incite into what causes the 'lurch.'

I've seen many a people come into the shop and say, "Well it was in gear??' Then you ask, "Was the parking brake engaged?" and you receive a reply something like this, "You know I cant really remember, I think it was but I don't always set it, the car holds its self in gear."

I'm not trying to reticule you, or teach you how to drive, just prevent a headache.
