So, that tacoma's fuel tank is 21.1 gallons...right?

My Ultragauge said I had 3 gallons left, I had put 278 miles on that tank and UG said I was at 15.6 average. That leaves me with 17 gallons and some change used up.

So, I filled up at a painfully slow gas station (25 degrees out and lots of people fueling up). It took nearly 12 minutes to get my tank full.

The odd thing is that 21.7 gallons were filled into my tank...UG thought I had 3 in there, and toyota says I should only have 21.1.

Anyone have answers for me? I'm still in a constant battle with my MPG...I thought I was doing great with the UG set up and it showed me 18-20...I guess not?

What did your "fuel gauge" show??? How did you put 21.7 Gals in your truck? Never go by what the UG "thinks" you have in your tank. Go by your fuel gauge.

By the way.... My UG has always been within +/- 1 gal from calculated so it is pretty accurate.

The temperature of the gas may make the pumping of the gas to be inaccurate. The colder the temperature, the more condensed the gasoline is, and the less accurate the pump indicator may be. I hope you did not pump gasoline till you could see it in the spout. If you did you have overfilled your tank and you may trigger a check engine light if the gas travels down the vent hose to the charcoal filter. If it becomes soaked with gas, you will cause a engine code to come up and replacing the charcoal canister is the only solution, and it is expensive. You should fill till the pump clicks off, then round your money to a number that want to stop on, like a whole dollar. You then figure your mileage from the miles traveled divided by the gallons pumped. Good Luck.

How long after the fuel light came on?

If your fuel light came on and you filled up you have about 60 miles/3 gals left.

If your light wasn't on yet, then yeah the pumps need to be re measured.
Go back and see when the pump was last serviced.

My local paper submitted all the weights and measures paperwork in an article and the gas station around the corner was off like 8% in customers favor. Not bad lol

Is that guaranteed to happen ? The shutoff didn't work either but luckily I caught it just as it hit the top. I've only driven a few miles since the fillup

No... it is under the bed of your truck.

Now.. on to more important things. I seriously doubt your truck was almost completely out of fuel. I have driven with my light on for 20 miles or so and the most I have ever put in mine was around 19 gals. I'm going to venture a guess and say the fuel pump is off.

Great. And the shutoff was not working. So, I guess I wait and see if I get a code. If I do, hit the dealership up because I just bought the truck two months ago.

You shouldn't get a code for one time. If you continually fill it up to the neck you run the risk of messing up your canister.

That makes me feel better. I appreciate the heads up. I will no longer get it that full. I just hope it doesn't happen after this once
