It's not bad, gets me where I need to go and can get around the slow drivers on a 2-lane. Now the F-350 diesel I drive at work, that thing can get up and moving.

I read a Road and Track article where they tested all the midsize trucks. The Tacoma, loaded to full payload, was faster than the V8 GMC Canyon....empty. The 1GR-FE might lack int he HP department but it's torquey as hell. The redline being right about 5,300 doesn't help that's for sure. Long as stroke isn't good for making high RPM power.

If i could have bought a DC, 4x4 taco with the 4 cyl /5spd, I probably would have. The V6 power is nice when towing, otherwise, its more than I really need. Fast? Nah. I don't have the need or desire anymore, especially in a truck.

Even with a experienced driver behind the wheel?

Yes, I have the 3.4 which I think was the biggest back then. I didn't realize they had put a 4.0 in the second gens. Do they still have a 3.4?

It has been a while since I've gotten times, but it usually feels slugish. I do have a toolbox (100LBS) and retreaded tire (Don't ask.) in the bed though. I doubt that matters much.

    Nice.

V6 Auto and way faster then I would have thought for a pickup. I don't have a need for it often but occasionally a guy gets in the right lane and tries to beat me on the freeway ... haven't lost yet.

That's only half the story though. You can't control when the automatic shifts and you can with the manual. Your goal in a manual is not to shift as fast as possible but to wind out your gears for more speed.

That's why race cars are manuals - more control over the power band.

Got the singlecab (it's lighter than most folks on here) and the four cylinder. I am quite surprised at how fast the vehicle is. Handles like a wallowing tub of shit but straightline acceleration - like getting on our lovely SoCal freeways, populated by generous, skilled, and courteous drivers...oh wait, I meant just the opposite - it does just fine. Enough so that I couldn't see any circumstances where I'd need the six.

Doublecab would be a different story.

Modern auto, you're damn right. My wife got an FR-S. She wanted manual until I showed her how to use the paddles. Game over. No human can shift that fast.

    Mrs. Fast N' Furious now.

mine seems fast for a truck, make sure you have plenty room to stop, definitely lacking in braking department.
