I think it's because your odometer is off by the % rev distance? Don't know if odometer is based off speedometer or not in these vehicles.

We all know larger tires = lower speedometer reading than how fast you're actually going and vise versa with smaller tires.

So in agreeing with what you and others have said, you'd use the following formula: (distance driven / volume of gasoline used) * % rev/mi decrease (or increase if going to a tire w a smaller circumference) = calculated MPG

You could also fill up at a gas station, drive a known distance (more distance = more accuracy), come back to the same gas station and use the same pump to refuel your truck. Calculate from there.

 

I don't know if somebody already said that but that's what I came up with.
