    Your using mig on the frame? I would have gone with stick to get the extra penetration. Are you welding up or down on those?

    Using mig with everything. I've never used anything else and can't afford to have both. If I need better penetration than what the welder provides, I just use a torch to preheat.

    thickness of metal? speed? heat?

    When the metal is its full thickness (what i was using for my rack) i could use "hi" heat and speed at about 3. it would do ok, but when the joints were too thin, i had to turn the heat down to low and it took forever to get it hot enough for penetration. i just have to get some pieces of metal and practive basic beads with the welder more.

    what are you using to clean the welds btw? i dont have a nice wire wheel right now, or any thing to buff it down and shine it up. just grinding disks

    Flap disks and wire wheels work the best. They aren't that expensive, you should get some.

    youre right, i should get a wire wheel that is worth a dam.

    the problem is the piece i cut up, got ground thin, and the piece i was welding too was full thickness. little penetration in one, hole in the other.

    jon, did i mention how I really really dig your bumper?

    Its just really nicely done and aesthetically pleasing and accomplishes everything it should for a rock crawler. I love my CBI bumper...but for rock crawling its big, yours is tucked up there for a great approach angle.

    after seeing how that one was done, if i did it again i would forgo the good looking cool factor of the plate bumper for one like yours.


    honestly, i know this is a stretch as well, but ive considered putting a partial exo cage on my truck haha. ive seen a bunch of them just tie into the sliders, especially in the back, so i was thinking it wouldnt be too hard to start to make one that came up and over the back portion of the access cab by the windows, and maybe tied into some posts that go around the roof and down the the front of the sliders by the fender/door line

    It is a beautiful bumper. I'm not even a fan of tube style bumpers but that one looks beast.

    If Jon's first move was to take a piece of paper and pencil and draw out a plan, he'd have saved enough money and time to have a sick rock crawler and a house on 15 acres somewhere.
