IMO, it is a dirth of quality options that KM2s have any success at all. If there were any better choices available, I would not buy another set. That is bad news for BFG/Michelin in the long run.

I have to question how profitable it is to make an inferior tire and count on users to re-buy the same crap after the 1st set prematurely wears out.

The only thing the KM2 has going for it is there is no real competition.

 

so why fix it?

I mean..if i was going to buy new tires..id get KM2s. What would you get?

Im saying that they aren't going to bring back a tire that was older and did better then their current head liner MT tire..they would loose money probably

 

If the KM design was available in "my size", I would not hesitate to buy a set and hope that they are as good, if not better than the original.

If I had to buy a set today, I would not buy another set of KM2s. And I would not follow the current trendy tw crowd and get goodyears. No, I think I might have to pay a bit of a premium and get a set of Toyo MTs. To me they are the most interesting of everything currently available.

Check out the Nitto Trail Grappler. Very similar performance to the Original KM's....they are not cheap though. I run them on the Dmax and they are fantastic. I actually bought two sets they are so good.

 

I get it.

Our older trucks have very little value in the eyes of our insurers. It is way to easy for them to total it. And please don't react with the typical "just buy it back and make it a trail rig" response because it isn't always as easy to do that when it is your only form of transpportation.

Getting a solid bumper as Ben plans to do, reduces the chances of getting it "totaled" by the ins co.

What I mainly want from an MT is traction in marginal conditions and durability. This mostly translates to a very durable sidewall design. This is the ONLY thing that the BFG MT has going for it. Traction if not its strong suit.

The Toyo MT is heavier but that is because of heavy construction, a very good sidewall and is very durable and has excellent off road traction.

 

I have read they are good. But I don't know anybody that has run them on a lighter vehicle like a 1st gen. It would nice to have that kind of feedback.

The other issue is available sizes. Almost no support for 15" sizes. I favor the narrower designs, 33x10.5-15, 255/85-16, 255/80-17. All three are essentionally 33x10.5. These sizes aren't available with the Nittos.

The closest sizes are the E-rated 285/70-17 (33x11.2) and 285/75-17 (34x11.5)

 

Haven't looked into the toyos so ill have to take your word for it.

Bumper reduces animal impacts. Want save anyone from a big front end collision. Plate and tube bumpers actually help transfer more impact into the frame..instead of crumpling. So really they make your chances worse..

In minor collisions it'll work great yes tho.

If I wrecked one of any of those...I'd be fucked.

After seeing JW's tires again, I think I am sold on swampers. He said he swampers have more road noise than both his MT/R's and KM2's that he has had in the past, but they perform great and he has 32,000 on them and they still looked brand new. I'm pretty sure they had more tread depth on them than my KM2 that only has like 2000 miles on it. My others have about 13,000 miles now and I think they are below half tread...

I was looking at 37" MT/R's but hell I can get some nice 37" Swampers for about the same price and I can keep my wheels with them.
