Was this coming from one of the state park rangers? Just curious. I've seen it on many maps as one way, however I've done it both directions no problems a few years ago.

Diablo and pinyon drop are both marked one way on maps. I always thought it was a precaution for people so they didn't get into something they couldn't get out of. Ranger told me that it is one way, period. I'm not sure if that's the law or they just don't want people tearing it up when going up, makes extra work for them.
He visited us at the end of sandstone after the spotter plane saw me going up and over the collapse area from the earthquake. That is about a mile from the end of sandstone but apparently since the collapse they now consider the end where it collapsed so even if your rig can get over the collapse you are not allowed. I did not know and someone had taken down the signs so it was just a warning. I'm sure the signs will be back up soon so it will be easy to tell where to stop.

Good info. Thanks Tyler. I pulled a map and I see where Sandstone is. I consulted my go-to book for Anza-Borrego and the author wrote it's because vehicles can't pass in the wash (after Diablo dropoff). I hope to make it back out there sometime this winter. Have not been out since April. Back in October, folks from OAUSA.net group had reported lots of damage from the summer thunderstorms. How did it look to you?

Diablo and the area just below (broken shaft gulch) leading to fish creek were passable for the last few years but the October thunderstorms certainly did a number on broken shaft, exposed more rocks and washed much of the backfill sand out making it very challenging. Last week the parks service went thru with track loaders and now then entire section could be easily done in a Hyundai. We can just hope for some more rain to bring some of the challenge back.

It seems to me that the parks service is trying to make the entire area very "Subaru" friendly with no real obstacles to attract the "jeep" types. Unfortunately there are some people that are in the off road community that simply cannot stay on trail so I understand the parks protecting the habitat.

Well, I asked a few questions of the park service and it was suggested that they are looking to re-vamp that area for more tours, guided private and state so the Prius crowd can drive thru....Sigh..

well, fishcreek/sandstone canyon is not part of the ocotillo OHV park, its part of the Anza State park and they are trying to make it more public friendly, what I was told today on the phone. But yes, the end is in sight as far as what we know of that area. I think the more public friendly access will make it worse for closure as most of the public wont pick up after themselves and what not.

and Howdy Doug, havent seen ya around for awhile how goes it?

& yeah, pretty sure it'll be the public's ignorance & refusal to pick up after themselves that'll be the demise of open areas to trail
