I decided to run dedicated snows this season to see what happens compared to my Load Range E BFGs.

I've got Hankook I-Pike RW11's in 265/70. My main gripe with the BFGs was that when coupled with the Off-Road's super touchy brakes, in wet weather I'd engage ABS without even trying. I was worried in the slushy stuff that I'd be sliding all over the place. I slid a little on slush today when I was out, but I was also driving rather abruptly as I was in a poor mood at the time.

I love my BFGs in the other seasons, but let's be honest, I just like how they look with the white letters...yeah, I'm that guy.

Most of the time when I slide I just let off of the gas and the truck falls back in line. I disabled ABS because it's way too easy to trigger. I feel more confident stopping with it disabled.

I really miss my duratracs! My Bridgestone 840's suck in snow. :(

I should say I went through last winter with 'em (the BFGs) and didn't have too many issues, but I figured why not upgrade when I can.

I enjoy sliding around when I'm somewhere that an errant pothole won't cause me to break into pieces.

So according to this chart, I could run 0w20, 5w20, or 5w30. Edit: looks like I can't run 0w20. I wonder what's different?

Too thin at start up probably. Might be so thin it blows by rings at startup. I wouldn't run 5W 20 either, that's a pretty thin oil.

    You think?

I run a 0w-30 in my STi and have had fantastic UOA results.

I prefer having the 0 viscosity for startup, especially in a colder climate.

That's what I was thinking, better for start up. I wouldn't think it would make a noticeable difference on MPGs. Altough one of my previous cars I ran Royal Purple 5w30. Decided to try Quaker State Q and somehow ended up with 10w30. I noticed a difference.

The STi is a different engine though. Not every engine can deal with an overly thin oil. My wife's 4 banger runs 0W-20 but I wouldn't run it in my truck. Different engineers, seals, parts, etc.

I get what you're saying about the lighter oil for startups but I don't think the MA climate is cold enough to warrant running a lighter oil just for easier startups. Maybe upstate Maine or Alaska but even then, I'd go with a block heater before running a lighter starting oil. Just my opinion though.

You shouldn't have noticed a difference once the truck warmed up. The 30 is the operating viscosity for both oils so both should have performed the same once the truck warmed up.

Since the first oil change, I haven't run anything other than RP 5w30.

I had the dealer do the oil changes until I was out of warranty, since then I switched to Mobil 1 5W-30. No plans to switch to anything else, it seems to be working well although I do burn a bit between changes.

I had 31" Grabber AT2's on a Nissan Hardbody 4x4 for a while. They were loud and they cupped like crazy, even though I rotated them every 3k to try to stay ahead of it. Plus my gas mileage sucked with them on. Prior to installing the Generals I had a set of Cooper ST's on it, and was averaging around 22-24 (4 cyl). After I installed the Generals I was averaging 16.
They made it about 30k before I finally got frustrated enough to replace them, and they had around 1/4 tread left.
As a caveat, this was probably six or 7 years ago, so perhaps they've improved them since then. Or perhaps not.
    No experience with the Nittos.

Are you moving or stopped while trying to get into 4X4? I know that my truck just flashes the light when I am stopped but when I put it into gear and drive slowly it engages every time.

If you mean 4-lo there's a song and dance, 4-hi should lock in on the fly no problem. If you're just sitting there and you select 4-hi it might not engage right away (mine doesn't always), move the truck a foot or two and it'll engage.
