Hub centering rings

I just had my wheels balanced at my local dealership. They told me that since I had aftermarket wheels there is a little space in between the hub of the wheel and the hub on the axle. They also told me the truck would ride smoother with hub centering rings and that I could get them from my local 4x4 shop. If someone could tell me if this is bs or where I could find them.

 

BS..... Aftermarket wheels act just like stock wheels... tighten down the lugs and it should be flush. No gap between the wheel and the axle

 

You don't know the size of his hub. I run rings with my American racing wheels.

It all depends of the wheel hub bore.

 

They definately can't hurt.

 

Its definitely better to be hub centric, then all the weight resting on the lugs.

 

I don't run hubcentric rings on my tacoma with AR Chamber wheels and have no issues, I would drive it the way it is for a while and if you notice any weird vibrations then look into the rings.

 

2nd gen hub bore is 106mm (inside diameter)...but you need to know the outside diameter (hole size of your wheel), most aftermarket wheels for our trucks are 108mm. I ordered some Gorilla brand from Summit Racing...not delivered yet. Froogle.com search "hub ring". There are metal and polymer (plastic) types. I just figured to be safe, since wheels are not cheap.

 

The rings would not fit with my Helo HE835 wheels.

Aftermarket wheels are going to have a different centerbore diameter than the spindle/axle hub. Rings are made to fill this gap, and restore hub-centric fit like the factory wheels.
You'll need to know the wheel centerbore and spindle/axle centerbore sizes, and get rings to match. They're inexpensive.
If you aren't having vibration issues right now, then you can decide whether or not to bother.
The vehicle's hub diameter is different between 2wd and 4wd - and possibly different between different years and models of 4wd. I wouldn't take a dimension you read for granted. Call a good wheel shop and see if they have a selection on hand they can match you up with what you need.

 

I have a local 4x4 shop that customizes all kinds of trucks. Maybe I will get with them on helping me fit some rings on my wheels.
