Had real stuff twice and thought it was going to taste a lot worse than it did. First one had apple cinnamon spice to it. It had the whole root in the jar and it was delicious. That was from West Virginia. Second was straight and burned on the way down but it certainly did the trick! That was from one of the Carolina's.

Personally I’ve always felt that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be the name of a convenience store chain not a Government Agency. When asking someone you know that has shine if they have any to sell the normal correct reply is it wasn’t made to give away.

Can’t believe all this talk about “Mountain Dew” and no one has yet mentioned North Carolina Shine. The Scots and Irish that settled in the Mountains of Western NC started shining corn back in the early 1800’s. It is a lot easier to distill it than get it down off the mountain and sell it as grain. And a number of them still are. Junior Johnson got into NASCAR after spending time in the Federal Pen back in the 50’s for running shine out of Wilkes County. NASCAR got its start from bootleggers out of the mountains long before Junior.

Spent my twilight tour on recruiting duty in Western NC. A kid from Rosman that was in delayed entry program came in one day and said he couldn’t go to boot camp. That his Daddy and Grandpa had been busted by the Feds and he had to take over the family business. Turned out to be one of the biggest shine busts of all time and ended up he did not ship to boot camp.

If you come across a still in the mountains while hunting do the same as finding a pot patch. Just turn around and walk out the way you come in. After a half mile or whenever the cover gets thick enough make a hook around on high ground just like a deer does before it beds down and hunker down low to watch your back track for awhile. Don’t go back to the truck until you're sure it is clear. If someone is following you and you're off the side enough they will just walk past you. And keep your mouth shut.

Lived in NC for quite awhile before I moved to Mn. Wherever I lived in the South I was told that I was OK and was “just from up North”. I told one old timer yeah but both my boys are Southern, they were born in Va. and raised in NC. He gave me a disgusted look and said "son, just because the cat climbs in the oven and has kittens don’t mean we call them biscuits". Then he smiled and said that me and my boys will do though. I still consider that one of the best compliments I have ever received. Being Southern is an attitude also. And a damn good one.
