I cannot believe there is not video of this. What the hell was the owner of that FJ thinking?

Yes, But also look at the signs of a warmer day. People are not really dressed that warmly, and I see bare ground, not snow blowing and ice behind the truck.

I first time I saw it stuck, the weather seemingly looked colder, and nasty.

The warmer weather was an important key to removal, of the FJ.

It was 44* here today. The first day above freezing since he got stuck. It might be running, but driving it I think will be another story.

I had two FJ Trail Teams (2008 then a 2010) and live in Utah. I drove through similar stuff many times and never even came close to being stuck. I tried to get that thing stuck in areas that were close to my house and easy to get out of (like with a winch and something to attach it to very near me and plenty of other guys around) and didn't ever even feel like I was losing traction.

No knock on the person driving, but that looks like the perfect storm for this type of situation. Balding tires with poor grip, nothing to winch to, no winch that I can see, out in the middle of the Great Basin, horrible weather, and no idea what the road is like in the other three seasons of the year prior to going through.

Glad they got it out. I loved my FJ's. If I hadn't broken my back and had kids who I couldn't load in through the awful rear doors I'd still be driving one of them for sure. As for now my Tacoma TRD TX with virtually the same offroad goodies (ATRAC!) as both FJ's will have to do. ;)

I missed the posts before me... yes it is significantly warmer out here today. I am a short distance due east of these guys. We got up around 40 degrees F this afternoon, which is a good 30 degrees warmer than it was a week ago. It felt like shorts weather compared to what we've been going through lately. No way I'd go out in the boonies in the temps we were having over the last few weeks. You couldn't pay me enough. It's asking for death.

It ran, they had it idling all day.

I was out there for a little this morning, wasn't too exciting watching them chainsaw the ice and we got hungry so I left. Sorry I missed out on seeing it pulled out, that'd have been exciting.

Got to talk to a few of the people there and they were saying they'd broken a lot of crap and even a chain which whipped across the front of the ford pulling on it and broke the windshield.

It was CONSIDERABLY warmer today than it has been this past few weeks. I was out and about in a sweatshirt. Last time I was up there I was in a sweatshirt and a carhartt and it was still pretty damn cold. Things were starting to thaw as they disturbed them, just a little. Today was a good day to do it.

Pulling from a single point with a chain seems like a great idea, until it snaps right? I know guys who've been inches from death from shackles and links flying through their rear windows. I can't imagine how we'd have gotten this out, other than probably shackles and snatchstraps at as many points as possible on one corner and then pulling with multiple vehicles to sling it out sideways up on top of the ice, and then pulling it back or forward with attachments to a couple of vehicles pulling straight and hoping to skate it across (since it looks like there's nothing to winch to, other than another vehicle). Scary as hell.

I saw one up here in a canyon a few years ago where some bozos were flying along in an old Bronco and flipped and were leaning on their side against a bunch of Aspens and a whole group of the FJ guys went up to get them out. It was a nightmare. Luckily nobody was flung out while it rolled down the mountain.

Funny how used to the cold we get eh? My son wanted to leave his coat off and go ride his scooter because it was 36 today when he got home from school. He's running around in sweat pants with a short sleeve shirt goofing off. I think we get conditioned to the extremes out here.
