Front Components in 2009 Dbl Cab

I have already changed my HU to an Alpine 9886 and I am in the process of changing the front speakers to a pair of Infinity Reference 6020cs (they are components). I plan on adding an amp and a sub within 6-9 months and then hooking up the Infinity’s to the amp, instead of the HU.

I have had the front door panels off and have been looking at the existing wiring and my question is this: Can I install the components utilizing the existing OEM wiring (i.e. simply swap out the OEM tweeter and the OEM speaker for the Infinity components) and not use the Infinity crossover. When I install an amp, I would then of course rewire everything and use the Infinity crossover. I also plan to do the whole sound deadening thing then. I am just looking to get the speakers in quickly.

The alternative is to cut into the OEM wiring to feed the crossover and then run wires to the components from the crossover (that is – do it right <g>). However, the wires in the door that feed the OEM components don’t match the colors coming off the HU, so I am a little uncertain as to what I might have to tap into. I haven’t removed the kick panel covers to see what colors the wire are before they go into the door and there is a big taped up bundle in the door where it splits to feed the tweeter and the speaker that I haven’t un-taped, so if I do that all may become obvious.

Use the Infinity crossover. I'd just install the crossover close to the H/U, somewhere under the dash, until you get your amp. I also recommend running new speaker wire now. Not that there is anything inherently bad with the stock speaker wire, it just makes things easier (in my opinion) in the long run.

 

If I can figure out where to tap into in the kick panel I would do that because when I install the amp I will just be running speaker wire from the back of the truck up to the kick panels........if I have to go all the way back to the head unit now, I will have to play behind the dash for the speaker wire which won't be used when I get an amp.....decisions, decisions<g>

 

Use the crossover. The factory tweeter gets its signal throw a resistor (or some other circuit element) thats acts as a very ghetto (At best) crossover

 

I installed the crossovers in the door and ran new speaker wire to the HU. I left it long enough to go to the back for when I install an amp (and coiled the excess in the kick panels).

One thing to consider, when installing a crossover in the door, is moisture. If your crossover isn't sealed (it has a mesh cover or something) then you can have some shorting out issues. If your crossover is a sealed up design, you might still have some issues around the connections with water intrusion. The chances are fairly small, but not so small that I'd leave my crossovers in the doors permenately. You might want to consider moving the crossovers to behind the kick panels at some point in the future, just for peace of mind.

I took a look at the kick panels and decided mine weren't going to fit there. I suggest under the seats, close to the front. The idea is that you can fiddle with it without removing the seat.
