All it needed was some extra kitty litter...

Works like a charm for traction.

But I also think you'd be smart enough to not get into that situation in the first place. :)

The whole situation is just bad. Good thing FJ's are tough (I know some disagree, but I've worked on a lot of vehicles in my life and the FJ's are the most well built vehicles I've ever owned, driven, and worked on).

They are going to want to follow your advice and not only change the fluids, but look at them carefully and perhaps start taking things apart and inspect them fully. I bet the fluids are burned up pretty badly and have chunks of metal floating in them if they burned things as badly as I think they did. I'd check the CV's, transfer case, and on and on. The crankcase breathers probably goofed the fluids since I'm sure they went into deep water initially and inhaled a bunch of crap.

    Ya... look at it.

There's a big difference between "starts and moves" and "doesn't need repair"

I feel sorry for the next owner. This is going to be band-aided together, driven for another year until he gets tired of the issues, traded in on a new one, sent to auction, and some poor sucker with no clue of the history is going to buy it for his wife and kids.

Seriously...what off roader uses a tin can thin bumper bar like that? It's just for looks, so I'm not surprised it bent up. Which also means he's just ignorant of offroading. We can't prevent ignorance from buying and messing up good vehicles, but we sure as hell can place them on the wall of shame!

    Obviously you missed this:
    ^He said it so well!

Not everyone is a hardcore offroader. Obviously they aren't rock crawling or hucking dunes. He went out for a trail ride with some friends. Who cares if he has a bull bar?! If he wanted it on there then it's his decision! I know a bunch of guys who wheel with stock trucks. What's the difference between what he did and driving down the road and t-boning a car? Messed up a perfectly good vehicle, same as here.

Should the situation have been handled differently? Obviously. An instant recovery would have been easy(er). They were clearly unprepared so yes that is a mistake. Everyone makes them. I don't see you helping the situation so get off your high horse and think before you crap on people. I know there's other people in here bashing them like you did, but yours really was painful to read. You basically said that he's not allowed to offroad because he has a certain accessory on his rig.

I'd agree with this. I rode out on many trail runs with the FJ locals who made fun of me non-stop because I drove a totally stock Trail Teams. They all had lifts and crazy bumpers and an extra $2000 worth of tires and wheels. I just went out stock and came home stock.

The Trail Teams had some nice goodies attached to it (it was basically just every option you could get on an FJ and better tires). So I used the things that came with it wisely (like A-Trac and the RR Diff Lock and so on as needed). I never got stuck. I had the tow kit and an off-road recovery kit, and we made sure to stay in larger groups. Nobody ever got stuck. In fact those who got the worst of it were the guys who had the most lift and wheels, because they tried to go over taller obstacles and smashed down. One of them smashed his passenger door up and into the vehicle. I didn't have that problem because I had the "weak" factory sliders that came on the Trail Teams. ;)

I think a lot of the lesson here is the same as with any other outdoor endeavor... be prepared. That doesn't mean you have to go spend an extra 50 grand on your truck just to make it look more off-road worthy. It means recognizing your limitations, and having a good plan of action in case somebody is stuck. If you don't have the equipment to get out, then rethink your lines and such. The Utah FJ crew always sits down and plans out who is leading at certain sections, where we are heading, where to meet if separated, etc. etc. It's just a matter of preparation.

I never found my factory bumpers to be an impediment to off-roading. In fact, I've never had a non-factory bumper on any vehicle I've ever owned, and I've never been stuck. Maybe it's just dumb luck, but I think that I can get a couple of shackles, some snatch straps, and a few other goodies in my recovery bag and hook up straight to the frame of anything that has a frame regardless of the bumper and assist in pulling them out by simply hooking up my D-ring receiver attachment and getting a good angle.

Hey, off road bumpers give you that extra horse power to get out of situations like this one. Never leave the paved road with out one. XD

I think the huge chunk of frozen dirt had more to do with fubaring that bull bar and bumper.
