Box Rocket - 2003 TRD Doublecab

Good question. I'm not sure yet. I was looking at them this morning and they have about 60% tread left after about a year. However I drive more miles than most of you. I need to double check my records, but I think I have about 30K miles on them right now. I think they'll be in the 50-60K mile range before I replace them.

Fuck... Thats pretty damn good, seeing you wheel your rig often as well, mine will pretty much be on the streets, so i think i can get similar milage as long as i rotate regularly.

 

That is a really sweet looking rig dude! I was kinda leaning towards the mica color on the new ones but never saw it in real life. I just got 2014 in super white. TRD OR DCSB. I saw your rear bumper and thought of CBI's with telescoping light. Must be nice to have the skills and equipment to fab yourself. I couldn't get the road trip link to work but very interested in reading it. Planning on Utah trip next year. Been looking at the White Rim, Burr Trails. Any ideas are appreciated!

Hey adam, Im looking to lift my truck soon. Is the whole "corroding" thing the only reason you went with OME? I was thinking of going with the Billy 5100 all around. I havent heard bad things about them.

I actually thought you had billy's untill i started digging around this morning.

Corrosion of the balljoints and threaded sections of the CO's were the main reason I decided against some other options. Yes, they can be rebuilt, but the OME stuff has equal performance to most other COs until you get into remote reservior/triple bypass type and don't have the same corrosion problems so less hassle. Same reason on the open spherical joint on most aftermarket control arms. That's why I stayed with the OEM upper arms or considered the Light Racing arms with a OEM style sealed ball joint.

All that being said, it was an issue for me here in Utah where the roads are salted in the winter and my truck is a daily driver so the winters can be brutal on those components. If you live somewhere that the salt isn't a concern, or you aren't driving a ton during the winter or you don't mind rebuilding your COs every year or every other year then there are some good options out there.

I don't have anything against the Bilsteins, I just prefer the OME stuff.

OME FTW! went bombing up a snow covered trail with lots of bumps and humps and the OME stuff once again surprised me. Rides very nice.

 

Hey Adam just wanted to say that i completely understand what u r saying about the ARB bumpers i have not any regret buying this bumper because i actually like how ARB does their bumpers me wanting a plate kind anyway. its just when i look at other guys tacomas that have an ARB on it and our body styyle too it looks like from the pics it dont have that big of a gap on theirs but a computer screen can fool somebody rather than looking at it on the trucks in person. i like the ARB and glad i bought it for the next time i go on some trails where ever. the time that i went with 02goldie and some other guys the bumper done awesome on the trails. u really didnt know it was on the truck until u got out and seen it. haha!! but its like u were saying i thought the same thing about adjusting it up a little more to take out a little of the gap. i know that their is going to be one but probably though can adjust it a little.

The only other question i had about for winching from it is to me i dont think 4 bolts r going to hold that bumper on whatever i winch with it. and if i pull the truck with it then with them 4 bolts it will jerk that thing off so quick u want realize it. this is what i was meaning by beefing the bumper up a little more. as far as how its built u couldnt ask for a heavy duty bumper but my thing is is if i pull anything with it will them bolts hold the bumper on ? and want jerk it off the truck? like u said before the guy i bought it off of may had done some modding to this bumper on the inside at least i know definite he told me his was a 99 with a 3" body lift and i seen where he cut the mounting brackets and used some steal to make a the bumper fit on his 3" body lift. this is what i had the guy that welded on my sliders cut the steal the guy had made and drop the bumper back down to fit on my truck. but this is the only thing i know he done with it. now thats nit to say that he didnt do more things to it but still the bumper was is exellent shape though. hope this makes some sense to u man.

 

well there should definitely be more than 4 bolts holding the bumper on. If that's all you've got then you've got a problem if you want to winch with it.

Idk about welding because if I have to take it off I would have to cut it and idk if u want to weld and cut taking the thing off if I needed to. Theirs got to be another way.

Adam, what's your opinion on picking up an 80 series Cruiser for wheeling? Is it worth dealing with the age and the gas mileage? Attempting to find a wheeling solution that has an automatic, a live front axle and can carry passengers. My other option is picking up a 2nd Gen DCab and converting the front end at some point.

 

An 80 series is a great wheeler especially in areas like NM where you aren't running tight wooded trails that much where the big body of the cruiser can get in the way.

You are really the only one who can say if its worth dealing with the age etc. everyone has a different limit of what is acceptable. Cruisers are tough and if you find one that hasn't been neglected it probably won't be too much trouble. If you get one that hasn't been taken care of that we'll then you'll have more maintenance to take care of. Typically you'll need to do a front axle service on it if the axle seals are leaking. That's not that difficult just takes time and is very messy.

If its just for wheeling then mpg shouldn't be as big of a concern. Head gaskets can be a concern on some cruisers but not all. My cruiser has 300k miles on it and is still on the original HG. So you can reliably drive them for a long time.

An 80 series will out wheel an IFS Tacoma all day long especially if it has the factory lockers. If you can find one with lockers you can lift them for cheap and throw some tires on it and out wheel all of your buddies unless they have hard core crawlers. But you can take 6 of your friends along.

Just take your time and find one that fits your needs and level of work you're willing to do.

You can have all of that pretty easily with a cruiser without the hassle of a solid a solid axle swap on a Tacoma that can be sketchy on the highway if the swap isn't done just right.
