My 2010 taco with 72k is now slipping from 4th to 5th gear while driving. Dealer says needs new tranny at 4700 bucks. I wanted to see if anyone knows of a place that rebuilds toyota transmissions? I still find it hard to believe that a toyota would give out this early in its life an really don't feel like paying the steeler ship to do the work. Im most likely going to drive it a little more before fixing it but trying to find a different solution. Thanks

Have you done a fluid replacement. There is a procedure post here that explains removing one of the cooler lines and flushing out the old stuff.

Also, there is a person hear by the name gearhead that is pretty knowledgeable about these trans.

I don't know all the ins and outs or failures, but there is a lot of talk about worn and leaky valve bodies. There is a repair kit for this.

Also, there is a company that might be cheaper that builds these as high performance transmissions and might be a less expensive alternative for a better trans.

Have you serviced the trans in the past? That seems to be a lot of miles without replacing the fluid. The fluid in an automatic gets very hot and there is a lot of friction the oil goes through.

If I have done a flush recently and the temp wasn't up u could ave too much fluid. I check mine the other day and it was pooring out after it warmed up. its much better now and had the me issue before hand.

X2. I bought a dump truck that was "broken" and would not lift until I took it home and filled the hydraulic reservoir. Worth checking!

There are many things that need to be diagnosed properly within the transmission . How did the dealership determine you need a new transmission ? Did they pressure test the transmission ?
in my opinion , it may be worth a try to get an aftermarket trans shop to have a peek at the valve body . There are a lot of fixes for the issue you are describing
And $4700 better be a brand new trans , not rebuilt .
I have been adding issues to my post . May be some info here you can use to fix your trans : http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...hift-kit-shift-recalibration-kit-2nd-gen.html

You can a new ipt transmission for $3800, but that's without install. Don't know exactly how that works, if that includes a core deposit.

    Again... this vvv

Trust me. after my S/C install the shifts were sluggish as well.

IPT upgrade solves everything. The stock valve body just cant handle the power and torque. The tranny is made for comfort.. so slow, easy, smooth shifts.

Is IPT really your only choice ?
From what I can tell , IPT uses the Gill Younger shift kit (TRANS-GO ) to firm up the shifts / boost pressure . Its not that difficult to make the trans shift more aggresive , its a matter of firming up the accumulators ( shift cushions )

If I could get my hands on a valve body , i would be glad to install a recal kit at the trans .Shouldnt cost more than $200 bucks plus labor . Ive been installing them for a long time but never yet on the A750.

A trans-go shift kit plus the added Sonnax boost valves would make a very solid transmission . Then decide what you prefer on the stall stage of the torque converter to match the torque curve of the engine you have .

All i need is a valve body . Who wants to be a gineau pig ? :D

As far as I know, and could find, IPT was it.

Interested on what you could come up with tho. No spare valve body's here.

I changed the fluid last month when I first started noticing the problem. Dealer told me that they checked the fluid level and it was good and that they confirmed that the tranny was slipping when shifting from 4th to 5th gear. Also that the only way to correct is a r&r it. I was hoping that maybe only would have to replace the torque converter.

My 13 has 10k miles on it and I notice that when I'm getting on it about 2/3 or 3/4 throttle that sometime the tranny slips for just a sec between 4 and 5 th, I hear the rpms jump for just a half second. I kind found it odd. This post has me wondering. Thanks for posting.
