My tie rods are fine. Solid 1" stainless steel with heims to double sheer mount.

Let me test drive a truck with an already bent tie rod with the pencil tie rods on a second gen is a different story.

Still one of my most ingenuitive recoveries to date.

not trying to turn this into any sort of argument.....but I'll throw out a question for consideration. What is gained by going with 35's over 33's? In truth I would argue that trail capability with 35's vs 33's is a miniscule improvement if any. None of that takes into account the FACT that the 35's are going to break more parts. Driving style MUST change with the larger tires unless major upgrades happen to drivetrain parts, particularly axles and the ring gear.

So all I'm saying is the only gain of going to 35's (and it depends on your taste) is looks. I won't argue that 35's look great on a Tacoma. Believe me I'm not down on the idea in theory. The 33's on my truck are the smallest tires I've ever had on any of my trucks. Everything else has had 35's or 37's. 37's made a noticeable improvement in trail capability but the difference is much smaller from 33's to 35's.

I've got 35's I can use and I've looked long and hard at going that way. But the effort to tub the firewall, get fenders to clear, buy the spare CV's that are necessary, the extra strain on the steering just don't make it worth it to run 35's instead of 33's that don't require all the mods, a lower need for spare parts and less strain on steering components.

Not trying to stop anyone out there (Monte, Mark etc) that are going to 35's. Your trucks will look cool, but until you go to a solid front axle there is more downside to upside with basically no gain in trail performance.

oh i know haha. doesen't take much to break something already broken.

it was just simply hilarious is all i was saying:D

i absolutely see what you are saying. for me at least, my 33x10.5s are really down on tread and chunking and are just wearing out. so i wouldnt be going from 33s to 35s, im going more from like 32, maybe 31.5 to 35. I figure if im going to buy new tires, might as well just buy the biggest ones i can realistically fit. And im doing that because in my area... there is a lot of desert rock crawling, and a lot of times if a trail run says 35s min and 1 locker min if you dont have that they will be very weary of letting you run with em. In fairness, as monte has pointed out, in off roading an inch here or there can mean stuck or not stuck, or getting through the obstacle. I figure if i want my truck to try and be in rock crawl mode i want to do all i can to make it better at it. even if it means i have to tub, cut, and carry extra cvs

Like I said, not trying to stop ya. I'll have a smile on my face while I relax with a cold beverage while I wait for you to change your busted CV, all the while still being able to do every obstacle you can do with my 33's. :)

    35's look good.

I wouldn't go as far as saying going to 35s is just for looks and there is no gain in trail performance.

Even the slight upgrade in tire size might aid in say, not falling into holes as far with those gained inches and aid in getting up an obstacle easier.

I've seen people running 35s who rarely ever break CVs. And then again I see people who run 33s and break them all the time. Very driver based.

you mean to 34.5's. Like 90% of tires are anywhere from 1/4" to a full 1" under what they are spec'd at once on the rig. Most 35's seems to be about 34.5" once mounted. And you are getting used 35's.
and Ben's over there like, I got 32's guys! (Inside joke for the ID BS thread...)
You have a point. There is a crack on one of the trails around here that everyone on 35's and up can cross while everyone else must bypass it. Luckily the bypass isn't very far away. haha

thats why I just have to pay more attention to what the tire is doing, and do my best to avoid popping that cv.

if i break a cv, it will be more than likely because im trying an obstacle i would not have tried otherwise with my worn down skinny bfgs. To me its all about just stepping up that one more level i guess you'd say. bigger tires, try harder stuff, break more stuff, fix and repeat.

well ya, but the used toyos have more tread than my bfgs had brand new.

when i got stuck on that rock over the summer and got winched out, i bet if i had 35s i would not have been stuck. my tires were just spinning on the surface of the sand, with that extra inch i might not have hung up my frame

    ON THE PLUS SIDE!

my 2.7 and 4.56 gears wont have the power to just pop cvs, it will take me being pretty rough. so i have a saftey net lol

    That's what you think...

Kinda with the old man on this one. I had the least ground clearance of pretty much every truck in my groups last year and I did just fine with 33's.

it was partly a joke, since everyone makes fun of me for the 4banger anyway

im not saying 33s arent fine, i have done just dandy with 33s. but if i need new tires anyway might as well get that extra inch of clearence and the extra cool factor.

jk, disregard that last one. absolutely not why im going through this much work

maybe its just my crazy perspective, but i would have never imagined being told that going up in tire size by 2" was not worth it if your objective is rock crawling. its not like everything is going to instantly break the second i get on an obstacle.
