I've always wondered about this one. Anyone on here actually use it? I'd like to get some first hand reviews.

 

I had a small one from harbor freight on my last fourwheeler, one time the lins got tangled up and I couldn't use it until I untangled it. It was a small winch though maybe a 2000 pound one. I drove through a creek and submerged it in clean water many times, only sunk it down in mud a couple times. Still worked up until it got stolen, I even bought another one for my new atv.

 

I have installed two of these on a friends equipoment trailers that get used daily. I have also seen many on the trail as well.


One thing is for sure, I have seen 10 times the broken warn winches as I have seen these, or smittybuilts. Heck everyone I know with a warn can't use it bc its broke.

 

I ran one for about 3 years in Arizona and New Mexico. I first got it to help clear my property in az and probably pulled out 40 trees and shubs. I did snap the cable from useing my truck to yank a big root out, took it back and they gave me a whole new one under the warranty! After that I had the second one for many years and is still running strong. Only complaint was the 150 amp self resetting circuit breaker thing it comes with, it would trip with multiple uses and you would have to wait for them to cool down and re-set. I just replaced that with a 200 amp Blue Sea circuit breaker for about $60. I think that's a good idea any way because you can trip the breaker your self and not have the power cables energized all the time then.

 

Sounds pretty decent then, especially for the price. I'd still like to know of others experiences though.

This thing works as advertised. It's not the fastest winch out there but I wouldn't expect it to be. I mounted to the front of my truck and use it to pull trees out of low areas on my property.

I am using this winch to remove dead and dying trees on my property. The 9000 pound rated HFT Badland Winch works perfectly for me. Here's what I like:

The assembly was simple and straight forward. I had it up and running in no time. I also purchased the wireless remote and the hitch mount. Every thing mated perfectly.

The power and speed are perfect. My trees are no match for this winch. The cable is heavy enough for the work but is still manageable. The manual mentions not exceeding 15 degree angles up or down for the cable coming out of the fairlead. Unless you're cutting down sequoias, that leaves plenty of opportunity to get the hookup high enough in the tree to control the fall.

The hitch mount will enable me to store this winch when not in use. I would would expect that to add life to the unit. It is heavy; thanks for the handles on the hitch mount. I am happy with the winch, the mount, and the wireless remote (latter two will be reviewed separately) and would recommend all to a friend.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bought this winch for my 1999 F150. The install was a little bit tricky, being that I was installing it inside the bumper of my truck, and the fact that the winch weighs 80lbs, plus the mounting plate, made it hard to maneuver into place. Once it was installed though it has been a great winch. It can easily pull my 7,000lbs truck with the wheels locked, as well as being great for pulling trucks and tractors out of mud. I have no doubt this winch will be able to whatever I ask of it.

Put this on my car trailer and have used it many times to winch on dead vehicles. One truck had 3 flat tires and a rear wheel was locked up. Pulled it up no problem. Overall very pleased. Did have to drill different holes for the fairlead.

I bought one used and beat to heck off [@] last week. Mounted it and used it back in the woods to see if it was good like seller stated. I honestly believe that my push bars and frame of the truck would rip apart before the winch gave out. LOLpulled my 5000 lb truck UP a 40 degree incline, with brakes locked and a bed full of firewood,,,,,I say it will do anything I would EVER need it to do!!My pushbar setup.....( custom made 1/2" steel pushbar plates with 4 inch square tubing that is 1/2" thick also, welded solid and solid to the frame, the pushbar weighs 150 lbs alone)Very happy with my 9000,,,,now the 12,000 lb winch and using a double line,,,,is used for what?...(bulldozers?)

First try pulled out a nice little stump no problem. Didn't even seem to have to work hard. This is not a cheap winch people, get one and see for yourself. I have a Jeep JK Unlimited. It will do just fine.

Searched a lot of places for a winch before buying this one. I put it on my 78 Ford F250 "highboy" with 39 inch boggers. I have pulled out multiple vehicles stuck in the mud and even a tree from out of the creek that A 3020 john deere tractor could not. Couldnt be happer, infact i just bought a second one.

Well, I started with with one and got a great deal. The winch I bought at the store did not work well of the box, so I switched it out (After 90 days). The new one I received has pulled out several trucks/jeeps/suvs of all sizes. Saved me where jeep was completely on frame in mud (2 trucks attempted to get me out) I've had it for a few months, and it's payed for itself.

I'm happy with my purchase and will continue to run this winch until my budget increases.

Installed this in my 2006 Ford 4 wheeler, I just love pulling chevy's out of the mud, however I double the cable and it gives me 18,000 pound pull power

Well I got mine and have my Amsterdam blue synthetic line ready to install on it, so once I get everything installed (by the spring) I'll post some feedback and or a review. If you've got questions in the meantime, I can take my new one out if the box and take pics, etc!

The 3 year warranty was $79.99 FYI... So for $209 + $80 + $150 (synthetic line) + $75 (fair lead and hook), I think you get a pretty decent setup.

 

There was an article I saw (Off road magazine I think) that said they hired some of ex Mile Marker engineers to design their winches. GL with yours Drew

I am serious. They were engineered by some people who used to design Mile Marker. Mile Marker makes all the winches for the military. They are made in China but so aren't alot of lower line name brand winches.

 

Good to hear. Hopefully it holds up. People on others 4x4 forums seemed to like the 12k version for weekend warrior truck applications, so let's hope the 9k is as good (plus it's a little faster).

 

So the 9000lb winch has an amp draw of 312A @12V at full 9000lb load . Any reason not to go with a circuit breaker/fuse rated to 300A instead?

 

Go on the Blue Sea websight... That 187 series circuit breaker is 200A @ 48 volts DC. And it states at 12 volts DC the interrupt amperage is 5000. Since it is a thermally responsive bi-metal style and they are inherently reactive to a high in-rush currents like those produced when starting up a large electric motor I chose the 200A (5000A @ 12 volt DC) one. Because lets face it, the only time you would want the winch circuit to trip is if there was a short, and since the wire size is 4 gauge or so, if that shorts to a ground it would have no problem tripping.

Now I'm not saying my choice was/is the perfect choice for everyone out there so for the guys that may not recognize a problem say an internal winch problem that would cause it to over heat and self destruct a lower amperage breaker would trip and possibly save the winch...

 

Ah makes perfect sense. I'm planning on hooking mine up with a 225A ANL fuse (http://www.bluesea.com/products/5130/ANL_Fuse_-_225_Amp inline to a PAC 500 Amp battery isolator relay (in cab winch power on/off). Looks like the 225A ANL fuse won't trip til about 315A, so that should work well.

Thoughts?

 

That would do... But order 2+ replacements so you are not stranded without use of your winch when it matters... That's why I like the circuit breakers.

 

thanks for the help. I found a 3 pack of the ANL fuses so I should be okay. I'll keep an eye out for a circuit breaker though. Probably the best solution.

 

they sell a wireless remote for 40 for this winch is it worth it to get a remote?
