    I'm thinking something more preemptive. If a mod has to take action, the thread already exists and the member will be pissed that his/her thread was moved/closed/deleted.

    This would be more of a "This topic has been discussed frequently and there's a good chance the answer you're looking for already exists on the site. Please use the Search feature and only create a new thread if you still cannot find the answer."

    The more redundant threads we have, the less functional the Search feature becomes and the site ceases to be a useful resource to find existing information.

    I think this would prevent problems and hassles rather than create new ones.
