I have been thinking about making the move to a tundra. I have been talking to people about the truck and I have 4 people tell me that Toyota stole the engine from chevy. I have tried to explain to them the major differences in the two motors but they just don't understand. Has this happened to anyone else.

Ive heard something similar too. What are the differences? is it just because its a 5.7 pushrod motor?

Chevy and Toyota have been partnered for many years on the pickup side of things, the steering rack for one is the same on some of the smaller chevy PU's, I know this because GM actually has replacement steering rack bushings that are a perfect fit on the 1st gen steering racks, this part is not available from Toyota, they want you to buy the whole rack if you need just the bushings.....go figure....

so maybe they did share some information on the engine front....

Do you really think he engines are related just because the displacement is similar?

I hear this a lot too. Apparently only Chevy is allowed to have an engine that has 5.7l of displacement.

My personal opinion is that Toyota is gonna charge you out the ass for The Tundra when the Tundra is probably NOT a Japanese original production. You would be be better off getting the Chevy for its proven abilities as the truck you are seeking. IMO Toyota's are at their best as import cars and mid-sized trucks. Toyota only developed the "full sized" market for America and only for America. I would never pay that much for a work horse Tundra. Long story short...American muscle is still cheaper and cheaper to repair for a big rig type of truck. You would get better value out of the full-size domestic. America created that market.... but yeah if u have the money? and you dont care? get the Tundra. More reliable.

lol how much do you think Tundras cost? For what I paid for mine none of the Big 3 really had that comparable of a truck, nor were they willing to come down to what I ended up paying, at least in this area. The closest I could have came and got the bare minimum that I wanted would have been a Ram Express with the Hemi. I look at it the opposite way. Had I wanted to spend more money I would have went with another brand. $32k OTD for a double cab 4x4 with TRD OR package and 5.7L V8. Around here that would have gotten me an STX F150, no available backup camera, bench seat, etc etc.

I wanted an FX4 F150 crew with 6' bed, but that was just way more than I wanted to spend, unless I wanted to travel to like Texas where it seems they insanely discount trucks.

You must be living in fairy tale land.

The current tundra is far cheaper than any of the big 3 trucks.

When was the last time Chevy made a 5.7 in a truck? And why would Toyota "steal" said old technology motor? Sounds like you have some ignorant teenage friends.

Disagreeing with this, when I bought my ecoboost I got 16.5k off the sticker price when Toyota wouldn't budge 3k off msrp. I also inquired multiple dealers (about 15 Ford dealers and 7 or 8 Toyota dealers), the truth is, there is far more F150s than Tundras to choose from so they are more lenient on the price.

Got the gas mileage down to 13mpg! Modification complete
I had a 92 Isuzu with a 3.1 made by Chevy. Chevy nova and Toyota corolla was the same car. As far as the tundra and the Chevy moter being the same engine, I highly doubt it, they look nothing alike( except the pistons maybe):)

I have never heard anyone that stupid claiming a motor created in the 50's was stolen by toyota and put in a brand new truck...Thats just ridiculous, they're two different motors! The only similarities are displacement :rofl:

I could be wrong but the Tacoma is just made for the north American market and is not a Japanese original. I have driven Chevys and I world rather tow my boat with my 2.7 Tacoma than my friends 2011 chevy with a 4.8. my truck stops some much better. Back to the point I was trying to make is people talk a lot but have no idea of what they are saying.

Crazy that people think just because engines share the same displacement they must be the same engine. Lots of engines from different companies share displacement. That's like saying if 2 people are both 5'11", 190 pounds they must be the same person.

For the record, displacement in liters is usually rounded off (up or down) to the nearest 10th. So both GM and Toyota claim 5.7 liters. But the actual displacement when converted to CC's is:

    GM 5.7L = 5736cc

    Toyota 5.7L = 5663cc

    Oh...and for you "non-metric" guys:

    GM 350 = 347.8 C.I.

    Toyota 350 = 345.6 C.I.

Neither engine is actually 350 CID. But it's close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades.
