Don't all the '09s have the ALSD? Because its no longer a mechanical part. The sport doesn't have a regular LSD anymore. Not to mention the traction/stability control takes over at a pretty low speed anyway.

LMAO...worrying about the on road ability of the TRD "off-road"?!

come drive my 84 mile round trip I do for work in a 99 wrangler with 180,000 miles. a solid front axle.front and rear lockers (it doesnt come with a front locker factory, previous owner put it there.) what seems to be 4.11's (again, previous owner seemed to have had it lifted at one point) a dying Aisen AX-15 auto, and my 15X30 tires...

your off road will seem like a rolls royce.

and, I've never really noticed the rear lockers in anything I've driven. unless they're engaged.

I think this is one of those rare times, when I have a(slightly) greater knowledge than most people here (about lockers). twice in 9 months...

    wow.

but hell, there are like... 2 dozen or so locker choices for wranglers...tacoma has what... 4?

so, what was I saying? oh, yeah...

    TRADE YA.

Won't make any difference on the road, it's a push button E-locker, not the old school, noisy as hell, auto locker you may be thinking of. On the 09s you also get the ALSD on all models. I went for the OR for the locker and ATRAC. If you are getting a 4WD why not get the most capable? If I didn't get the OR I would have gotten just a plain jane 4WD; the sports look too "boy racer", to me, with the non-functional hood scoop, IMO. I would understand it if it actually worked. The ORs look like trucks, not a parts hauler from the Fast and the Furious. Just my opinion.

What kind of rig can you get for the the few thousand dollars more the TRD costs over the base? And I think most of us financed our tacomas so there is no option to put the extra money in the bank. That would need to come out of pocket.

I was in the same boat. I decided that any off roading, if any, would be very light so I went with the Sport. Just having 4x4 was my main thing and I liked the looks of the Sport better. I figure like others if I ever get into a little more serious stuff(which I doubt I will) I could always add a locker. Really, the extent of my off roading will probably be getting her onto the beach for some surf fishing and I see people with plain jane Explorers, etc. on street tires do fine so I figured I don't really need the extra off road goodies.

Go to TTORA. You'll find plenty of rigs for under $4k. Some stock, some rusty, some are built.

Like I said, I PERSONALLY would get two rigs, a dd/tow and a trail rig. The OP is asking for advice on what to do, and I gave him some.

Two is one, one is none.

    Sorry for the delay..

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I went with the OR. Had to drive 140 miles one way but I got it.

It's Loaded, came with the little level lift, rims and tires but I paid too much.... No matter, I love it!

    36k - Ouch...

    Thank You!
