I just happened to have cash on me the day I went. When I heard this on the news this morning I started to worry then I thought back and now I'm relieved.

Has anything like this happened on such a large scale before? We get alerts at work for stuff like this and its normally small scale like employees at places having devices to steal card info, and small businesses getting hacked. Im glad im old school and still use cash

The parent company for TJmaxx had a similar issue affecting like 46m people or something I think.

TV reports this morning said Marshalls and a few other retail outlets had this happen a few years ago and it affected millions of accounts.

My wife shopped at Target and used her AMEX card a few days ago. AMEX is supposedly monitoring for unintended use of the card. I went to their website and saw no additional activity on our account.

The Target website has information about how to contact the three credit bureaus for fraud alert and credit stops. Take a look at the Target.com site for answers to many concerns.

My wife worries compulsively about even the slightest hint of hacking. This Target thing has her extremely upset.

At least its a credit card. We rarely use credit cards. Emergencies etc... So I know it was our debit cards. That worries me more. Can empty out the account quick. Then we have to wait to get our money back. My wife said she actually just got an email about this from our credit union.

I work for Target so I've used mine tons of times. I have the debit card so if someone got ahold of my info they can get my whole checking account. Gotta keep an eye out I guess..

Yeah. I'm glad my wife did not use any of the debit cards she carries. She said she thought about using cash, had it in her purse, but it was easier to use the card. I'll bet many credit unions are contacting customers because as you said the account can be cleared out in a flash using that assigned PIN.

Good luck. I hope your account stays intact and the yahoos that did the hacking get caught and punished.

From what I understood the only people at risk are those with Redcards, no?

No Will. Much more extensive than the Red Card usage. Any credit or debit transaction with a magnetic strip they are reporting here in Arizona.

Thanks. Yeah, I guess this is just the world we live in. Technology helps and hurts sometimes.

I've had two credit cards compromised this year. One was cancelled as I was driving back from Moab. Talk about a pain in the ass, I had to call in every time I fueled up.

The other time it happened someone created a duplicate card and tried to use it at a Target in Wisconsin.

I get 1% cash back on my cards but I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth it. If I miss one fraudulent charge when reviewing my statement that could wipe out the 1% cash back and then some.

Been using my Red Card lately too. Seems to be happening a lot lately with companies getting compromised. I'm actually in the middle of a fraud now with my Best Buy card. Someone made a $1200 purchase online and tried it again the next week but was denied. Nobody even called me from Best Buy. What the heck? I just happen to look at my statement and noticed it and called them immediately.

Yea I think most banks are on top of it tho... I went to Chase about 30 minutes ago to ask about this and to see if I should get new cards. My wife and I both used our debit cards at Target. They said not to worry about it, the fraud department knows about this whole situation and they're watching closely... It's also nice to have 0% liabilty on fraud. Or so they say...

We had an identity theft about 10 years ago. The 0% liability is nice but all of the hassle with credit stops, phone calls before credit is extended again, and just all around pain in the backside for something that was not self caused compounds the issue.

I hope they catch the people doing this. I understand there is some new technology with the cards that will make this less apt to happen again. Not sure what the new tech looks like, but I will be happier if it happens.

    Any debit or credit card.

With that said, IMO I think the least risky would be the RedCard Debit card. Since it is a different card number than your personal card it should only be able to be ran through Target itself.

Of course that all depends on if the scanned card information is stored separately from where the "linked" account information is stored.

the news this morning said the hack came from Asia, so probably no chance of anybody being caught and if they are caught nothing will happen to them.

Just heard on the radio now that they think nobody actually had info stolen, just a "breach". I bet pretty soon somebody will be sending out phishing emails saying "enter your information to ensure that it wasn't stolen" and somebody will bite.
